Today, we celebrate Indigenous Peoples’ Day in the United States to honor the Indigenous communities. We wanted to use this opportunity to impart the true significance of the American Indian war bonnet:
The war bonnet is used by Native chiefs of the Great Plains. While popular culture may portray that all Native Americans wear feather headdresses, these are reserved exclusively for spiritual and tribal leaders. They are traditionally made of eagle feathers, where each feather represents a heroic or brave deed or an act that helps the community prosper. As such, the war bonnet signals a rank and responsibility and may not be worn as a simple fashion accessory.
The headdress in the picture was presented to L. Ron Hubbard by the modern-day Blackfoot Medicine Man to honor his enduring friendship with their tribe and it can be seen on display in the L. Ron Hubbard Life Exhibition.

This organization was formed in 1984 with the purpose to unite, advance, support and protect the Scientology religion and Scientologists in all parts of the world so as to achieve the Aims of Scientology as originated by L. Ron Hubbard:

“A civilization without insanity, without criminals and without war, where the able can prosper and honest beings can have rights, and where Man is free to rise to greater heights.”

The Hollywood Guaranty Building opened its doors in 1924 for the Guaranty Building and Loan Association under one of Hollywood’s most prominent citizens, Gilbert H. Bessemyer.

Famous people who invested in the construction of the building were Hollywood icon Charlie Chaplin and filmmaker Cecil B. DeMille. It was the second building to on the Boulevard to meet the city’s height-limit.

From the 1930s to the mid-1980s, the building was the home of the Bank of America and in 1991, the L. Ron Hubbard Life Exhibition had its Grand Opening.

We are happy to welcome you here! Come have a look at the history panel in our lobby to learn more about the history of Hollywood and the Hollywood Guaranty Building and stay for a tour of the Exhibition to learn more about L. Ron Hubbard’s life.

During this Hispanic Heritage month, we wanted to share one of the stories with you, inspired by a real incident from the life of L. Ron Hubbard:

In 1932, when entering the Cuban Embassy in Washington, DC, a stranger walks up to him and cries out: “Ai, Pedrito! Como está?” Although Ron tries to explain that he must have mistaken him, the stranger replies with a wink and nod: “Oh, that’s all right, Pedrito. I won’t tell anybody you’re here.”

Next, he meets three mining engineers in the Puerto Rican hinterland who similarly greet him with an exuberant, “Ai! Pedrito! Como está?”

Similar encounters occurred in a bar in Latin America and on a street in Panama.

L. Ron Hubbard even found out who his Doppelgänger was and wrote a hilarious tale of intelligence run amok.

The original story was written by L. Ron Hubbard in the 1980’s as a screenplay. He made the story available to a winner of the Writers of the Future Contest Kevin J. Anderson who turned it into a novel. It was published as Ai! Pedrito! When Intelligence Goes Wrong in July 1998.

In the photo, you see L. Ron Hubbard during his 1932 mining expedition in Puerto Rico.

The Roaring Twenties were a time of growth in Los Angeles with the population of the city increasing more than twofold and new buildings being built across the city. The Hollywood Guaranty Building, which now houses the L. Ron Hubbard Life Exhibition, held its Grand Opening nearly 100 years ago on October 4th 1924.

Similarly, the Taft Building located at Hollywood and Vine opened in 1924, just one block east of the Hollywood Guaranty Building. It was built on the former site of the Hollywood Memorial Church. During the 1930s and 1940s, it housed the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, now internationally known as the organizer of the Oscars.
