On this day in 1984, Battleship IOWA was recommissioned for the third time and returned to active service after more than two decades in reserve.
Originally launched in 1942 and decorated for her service in World War II and the Korean War, IOWA underwent a major modernization in the early 1980s as part of the Navy’s 600-ship fleet initiative. She was outfitted with advanced weapons systems, including Tomahawk and Harpoon missiles, bringing her into the modern era of naval warfare.
The recommissioning ceremony was attended by Vice President George H.W. Bush, with Captain Gerald E. Gneckow serving as Commanding Officer as she rejoined the fleet during the Cold War. Shortly after returning to service, IOWA supported operations off Lebanon during the Lebanese Civil War, marking her final period of combat action.
