This piece came from a place I didn’t try to control… I let her reveal herself to me.
When I started, it wasn’t about painting a “beautiful woman.” It was about capturing a feeling—one I’ve seen, one I’ve felt, one I recognize in the quiet moments people don’t talk about. That space where a woman sits with herself… not performing, not explaining… just being.
The red behind her is intentional. It’s not just color—it’s emotion. It’s heat, memory, struggle, passion… everything she’s had to carry to arrive at this version of herself. And yet, she doesn’t fight it. She exists within it, calm and grounded.
Her gaze turned away was important to me. I didn’t want her looking at us. This moment isn’t for the world—it’s hers. It’s introspection. It’s a conversation with self. And I think that’s where true strength lives… not in what we show, but in what we hold quietly.
The strokes aren’t meant to be perfect. I don’t chase perfection—I chase truth. Every line, every imperfection, every blend… it’s me trying to feel her as I paint her. I don’t separate myself from my subjects. I become present with them.
And that turquoise… that’s her anchor. Her identity. Her connection to something deeper than the surface—spirit, culture, memory… something rooted.
I’m not just painting images.
I’m telling stories through emotion.
I am Steven Adebanji… and this is how I speak without words.
