Band of Vices | It’s Our Birthday
On this day, in 2015, Band of Vices launched two back-to-back exhibitions at the Sky Lofts in downtown Los Angeles.
What was promised to be an ongoing relationship was quickly thwarted when the building was besieged by more guests than they could have ever imagined. Located on the 13th floor, management did not take too kindly to the hundreds of guests their staff had to accommodate.
We would eventually move on to West Adams, a dream location, despite the 1,000 square-foot footprint. Located at 5376 W. Adams, Band of Vices was one of the only commercial residents on the block, besides the long-held family residents of Delicious Pizza. Alta Restaurant would soon join and help shape what is now known as West Adams Restaurant Row.
During the pandemic, we looked across the street, saw a huge shelled-out building, and took on a monumental project, both in scale and financially. At 5,000+ square feet, located at 5351 W. Adams, we held down the pink building, while turning our original space across the street into our Co-LAB, an incubator for creatives and curators.
After nearly 8 years, our Founder and Creative Director, Terrell Tilford, an original LA — West Adams — Mid-City resident, born and raised, made the bold decision to move downtown. As he puts it, “sometimes you gotta go to grow”… “we needed to get out of our own comfort zone.”
That’s where you find us now, in LA’s Historic Downtown Arts District at 1700 S. Santa Fe Avenue, Suite 371.
Originally founded as Tilford Art Group in 1999 in NYC, then moved to Los Angeles after 9/11, both endeavors have held the same mission: amplify artists and creatives, enrich brands through visual pathways, provide a voice for the voiceless, and allow those who have historically felt unseen to be seen. With integrity.
Has it been easy…?
Hell no.
Has it come with bruises and signs of war?
F**k yeah.
Has it been worth it?
HellsYeah, 100%.
Do we need you?
Yes, please.
We are not done.
There is still a lot of work to do.
And we are here for it.
