Subliminal Projects

Subliminal Projects ABOUT Subliminal Projects was created by artists Shepard Fairey and Blaze Blouin in 1995 as an artist collective, using skateboards as a fine art medium.
(543)

By expanding beyond skateboards and apparel to include fine art prints, the group began drawing the attention of Aaron Rose, curator of Alleged Gallery in New York. As a result, Subliminal is one of the key groups responsible for cementing the relationship between the skateboard culture with the fine art world, working with then-unknown artists such as Phil Frost, Thomas Campbell, Mike Mills, Dave

Aaron, and Mark Gonzales. By reintroducing Subliminal Projects to the current art scene, Shepard and Amanda Fairey continue to promote collaborations in the form of publications, art shows, and events between artists of varying disciplines.

"When Surveillance was first released with Subliminal Projects, it felt like a mirror held up to the quiet hum of control—systems watching, measuring, and predicting without our consent. At that moment, the piece spoke to an unease, a creeping sense of being observed. Looking at it now, against the backdrop of escalating turmoil, disinformation, and ever-tightening digital scrutiny, the work feels less like a warning and more like a lived reality. The armored figures, the ever-present eye, and the red symbols have shifted from metaphor to prophecy, capturing a world where surveillance has moved from shadow into daily life." -TOMO77

PRINT DETAILS: Surveillance, 2021. Artist Proof Print. $85. Silkscreen on 100% cotton rag true white archival paper. 18 x 18 inches. Signed by the artist. Subliminal & Serigraph publishing chop in lower-left corner. Available online only at subliminalprojects.com. International customers are responsible for import fees due upon delivery (Except UK orders under $160).⁣ ALL SALES FINAL.

"I try to draw from life and nature as regularly as I'm able. I'm always surprised by what I see. Things are always more visually interesting than I could ever imagine. My approach to life drawing is not driven by style, sales, or the desire to improve as an artist. It’s for looking outwards, for seeing the world with less categorization and judgement and with more humility and curiosity. In much of the work in Earthquake Country, I’ve been trying to convey the simple yet overwhelming feeling I get from tuning into the natural world, that certain universal rhythm that pulses away within it. This print is one of the places this “looking" eventually led to. It's an image of tranquility and regeneration, of interconnected, living, and life supporting bodies, though this is not utopia. There’s wildness there. It’s quiet but holds the potential for loudness."- Rob Sato

PRINT DETAILS: Earthquake Country, 2025. 11 x 14 inches. Letterpress on cream cotton paper with hand-deckled edges. Signed and numbered by Rob Sato. Numbered edition of 75. Subliminal Projects publishing chop in lower left corner.

Subliminal Projects presents Earthquake Country, a solo exhibition by Echo Park-based artist Rob Sato (), featuring new drawings, paintings, and collaborative textile works. Rooted in his daily drawing and dream documentation practice, Sato explores the tension between the chaotic forces that shape our existence and the need for rest and restoration. With a layered interplay of humor, horror, and beauty, the exhibition is both a personal reflection and a broader meditation on the literal and metaphorical tremors that define contemporary life. Underscoring the importance of grounding in community and place, the exhibition also includes collaborations with local artists Ako Castuera (), Rosie Brand (), and Graham Keegan (), whose contributions translate Sato’s drawings and paintings into textiles. The interdisciplinary works presented in Earthquake Country are both a reckoning and a release—an invitation to rest, reflect, and reimagine as we shift within spiritual, physical, and cultural unrest.

🗓️ Opening Reception: Saturday, June 7 | 7–10 PM

Lars Bergquist is a visual artist known for his photorealistic paintings displayed globally on buildings, street corners, and in galleries. His series “Life and Loss in LA,” featured in “Visual Language: Vistas,” explores the fleeting nature of moments. Inspired by his walks through Los Angeles, he focuses on discarded objects, transforming them into vessels of memory. By acknowledging what is lost, we remember the significance of these items, celebrating and mourning their absence.

Evan Hecox () is a multidisciplinary artist and designer based in Colorado. For the past two decades, his work has encompassed drawing, painting, printmaking, graphic design, and illustration. Much of his inspiration comes from his travels, featuring imagery that ranges from major cities to remote desert scenes, all unified by a keen eye for the mood and essence of each place and moment in time. The pieces created for Visual Language: Vistas appear photorealistic from a distance, but upon closer inspection, you can see they are hand-painted. The landscapes are of an area located near the Nevada border at the base of the Sierra Nevada mountains, which has a rich history as a filming location for Hollywood westerns and other productions.

Tyler Krasowski () is a highly skilled and accomplished draftsman, and his works express his excitement and passion for the immediacy of drawing. While drawing is often used as a preparatory tool, Krasowski values his drawings and sketches as artworks in their own right. He views the act of drawing as a spiritual and meditative practice, a rebellious language that encourages viewers to slow down and engage more deeply; death is right around the corner. His images showcase a variety of approaches and subjects, reflecting his deep admiration for the old masters, particularly printmakers like Dürer, whose detailed and intricate works invite closer examination.
