This week's item from the 3-D SPACE collection is a vintage Tru-Vue filmstrip based on the newspaper comic strip THE ADVENTURES OF SMILIN' JACK which had a run that lasted from 1933 to 1973. The comic, created and drawn by Zack Mosley, followed the exploits of dashing pilot Smilin' Jack as he flew around in his airplane. In its early years, the strip was meant to be funny, and featured Jack training scared pilots to fly, but in later years it became a serialized action comic with stories of mystery and adventure around the world. The Tru-Vue filmstrip, while most likely produced in the 1940s, features the 1930s version of the characters and a joke storyline.

One thing that makes this particular set unique is that the stereo images of Zack Mosley's original comic strip drawings were made by photographing diorama scenes constructed from cutout paper-doll style models of the characters, sets, and airplane. The filmstrip credits Roy Hufford with building the models and C. L. Crossan with taking the 3-D pictures.

The 15 panel story is shown in its entirety on our Patreon site, presented exclusively for our Patreon Sustaining Members in parallel, cross-view, and red/cyan anaglyph. https://www.patreon.com/posts/155321609

Several weeks ago on Patreon we began a weekly spotlight of items from our museum collection. This week we dig into our film and video archive for an extremely rare piece of lost media. In 1982, ten minutes of an episode of MORK & MINDY, starring the late Robin Williams, was filmed in 3-D but never aired. The series was canceled just two weeks before this episode was slated to run, so it was shelved and never made it to TV.

3-D SPACE has located this lost footage and digitized it to preserve in our museum collection, and we are presenting the 10 minute sequence in its entirety, shown for the first time in its native 3-D, exclusively for our Patreon members at patreon.com/la3dspace

OK, so we Rickrolled you yesterday for April Fools Day, but we wanted to get your attention...

While we haven't actually discovered a print of a lost 3-D silent movie, we DO have quite a few rare 3-D Film reels and video tapes in our archive that desperately need to be digitized and preserved before they deteriorate to the point of being unplayable. Please contribute to our Spring Pledge Drive to directly support the conservation efforts to save the at-risk media in our museum collection.

APRIL FOOLS!

3-D SPACE is thrilled to announce that we have FOUND a 35mm 3-D print of the lost 1922 silent film THE POWER OF LOVE, the first theatrical feature to be released in stereoscopic 3-D! We are currently having the fragile nitrate film digitally scanned so that it can be restored and viewed once again by audiences around the world.

Here is a short test clip showing just how amazing this restoration will look:
