Terrie Cha (b. 2003) is a multidisciplinary artist whose work investigates beauty, identity, and societal structures through sculpture, drawing, and tactile forms. She often merges human, plant and animal elements to explore alienation, desire, and rebellion, creating works that are both uncanny and alluring. Her practice examines the intersections of femininity, subculture, and personal fascination, challenging expectations while revealing complex emotional landscapes. Terrie’s work questions how human nature and identity are defined, critiquing the norms and power dynamics that shape perception and selfhood.

Cha’s current project continues her exploration of beauty, discomfort, and femininity, and the ways societal expectations shape desire. “The rat–human hybrid girl, along with the space she inhabits, represents the tension of existing within structures that were never built for people like her — or me,” she explains. The rat embodies life beneath human systems: present, surviving, yet unwelcome. The human form carries the weight of navigating patriarchy, capitalism, and rigid norms of femininity, creating a hybrid that negotiates the pull between belonging and resistance.

Hera Song (b. 2001) is an illustration-ceramic artist born and raised in Los Angeles. Under herabeanie, she portrays her credence on individualism and solitude with the approaches of wit, honesty, animals, and the subcultural upper hand of fashion. Her recent sculptural works revolve around the independently acquired, yet shared emotions of animals and humans through individually hand-building figurines to combat the mass production commercial figurine market and the cultural standards of the fine art realm and its stigma with cartoon ex*****on. Through clay, charcoal, and the depiction of tailless animals, her subconscious thoughts sketch themselves into youthful, sensual worlds.

Song’s current series reflects on the infinite nostalgia of the shoes of her dreams: Heelys. “All I ever dreamed of obtaining in middle school - early 2000s fashion and the steps of a cool kid - were in the majestic form of these sneakers with attached wheels,” she reflects. “From scraped palms and bruises and hesitation, the reality of the balance and reliance vital to a smooth glide on a Heelys ride made it clear that these wheels unveiled a longing to fit in, a longing to move as easily as everyone else.”

Song contemplates further, “13 years later, the desire to successfully stroll in Heelys still lives in my heart but returns to my feet in clay with weight and sincerity avoiding touching grounds. Through a rebuild of my own movements tiptoeing in high Heelys at the prom I never had, painting walls with Heely rollers, attempting ballet in pointe Heelys, I crease my Heelys in the midair of my tiptoes to tread a quiet acceptance to a path to the liberation of mine.” |
