Joe has always remembered his roots in Salinas, which helped propel him during his education at UC Berkeley (Cal), and playing pro football. He is the only man to quarterback a team in the Rose Bowl, Canada’s Grey Cup, and The Super Bowl. After a successful movie and TV career where he appeared in over fifty TV shows and seven feature films, he was hired as the head football coach at Cal. In his return to Cal, Joe coached “The Play,” the five lateral last second upset of John Elway’s Stanford team. “The Play” was recently voted the greatest single play in the 150-year history of college football. In 1986 he also coached Cal to the greatest upset ever in the 114-year history of The Big Game rivalry with Stanford. He always shared his roots during his later career as an entrepreneur and public speaker. To this day even while battling dementia Joe shares how his life in the GI housing project in The Alisal (East Salinas) shaped his positive perseverant character that guided his life.
