It is with heartbreaking news that because of our concerns of the possible spread of COVID-19, we have CLOSED our beloved Art Studio Smythe.
For over 30 years, Elizabeth Smythe has been an icon in the Heart of St. Matthews teaching group and private oil painting classes to 1,000+ adults and teenagers in the region. After completing her studies at the University of Louisville and studying abroad, Elizabeth Smythe opened Art Studio Smythe in 1990 at 143 Chenoweth Lane.
After launching the very successful Art Studio Smythe, Elizabeth introduced the Louisville area to the very first, “Paint Your own Pottery” business adjacent to her art studio. And from that venue, Elizabeth created her highly sought-after private collection of hand-painted pottery bowls, platters and plates illustrating the famous works of Impressionists of Monet, Vincent van Gogh, Georges Seurat and others, along with original Kentucky Derby themed works of art.
Continuing her work and teachings, Art Studio Smythe remained her proudest business venture and over the last 15 years her studio has represented her life’s work, and teaching her students has been her daily calling.
The safety of Elizabeth’s students, clients, friends and her own health remain the utmost importance to Elizabeth Smythe and with the no known cure or vaccine for COVID-19, Elizabeth has had to make the most difficult decision of her life and has had to close her art studio.
One day, when there is a proven vaccine, Elizabeth plans to continue private art lessons at another location.
Know that this has been a gut-wrenching decision for Elizabeth and her family. Your support is much appreciated.
For expressions of gratitude, support and well-wishes, we invite you to reach out to Elizabeth Smythe at; [email protected].
THANK YOU to the City of St. Matthews, The Voice-Tribune, the Courier Journal, The Chamber of St. Matthews, One Southern Indiana and to so many other out-standing news outlets and chambers for your support over the last 30 years.

Please continue to support our page as we navigate our “new normal”, together.
With our heartfelt thanks,
Elizabeth's family and closest friends
