Art Studio Smythe, 502-893-6232

Art Studio Smythe, 502-893-6232 It is with heartbreaking news that because of our concerns of the possible spread of COVID-19, we have CLOSED our beloved Art Studio Smythe.

For over 30 years, Elizabeth Smythe has been an icon in the Heart of St. Matthews teaching group and private oil painting classes to 1,000+ adults and teenagers in the region. After completing her studies at the University of Louisville and studying abroad, Elizabeth Smythe opened Art Studio Smythe in 1990 at 143 Chenoweth Lane. After launching the very successful Art Studio Smythe, Elizabeth intr

oduced the Louisville area to the very first, “Paint Your own Pottery” business adjacent to her art studio. And from that venue, Elizabeth created her highly sought-after private collection of hand-painted pottery bowls, platters and plates illustrating the famous works of Impressionists of Monet, Vincent van Gogh, Georges Seurat and others, along with original Kentucky Derby themed works of art. Continuing her work and teachings, Art Studio Smythe remained her proudest business venture and over the last 15 years her studio has represented her life’s work, and teaching her students has been her daily calling. The safety of Elizabeth’s students, clients, friends and her own health remain the utmost importance to Elizabeth Smythe and with the no known cure or vaccine for COVID-19, Elizabeth has had to make the most difficult decision of her life and has had to close her art studio. One day, when there is a proven vaccine, Elizabeth plans to continue private art lessons at another location. Know that this has been a gut-wrenching decision for Elizabeth and her family. Your support is much appreciated. For expressions of gratitude, support and well-wishes, we invite you to reach out to Elizabeth Smythe at; [email protected]. THANK YOU to the City of St. Matthews, The Voice-Tribune, the Courier Journal, The Chamber of St. Matthews, One Southern Indiana and to so many other out-standing news outlets and chambers for your support over the last 30 years. Mostly, and with sincere and loving gratitude, THANK YOU to the many students, clients and supporters of our beloved, local legend, Elizabeth Smythe. Please continue to support our page as we navigate our “new normal”, together. HISTORY OF ART STUDIO SMYTHE
30 years ago Elizabeth opened Art Studio Smythe and said,

“Yes you can learn to paint!”

Now we are Celebrating 30 years teaching thousands of first time Artists

At a very young age Elizabeth discovered her passion for art. Recognizing both her love and talent; her parents enrolled Elizabeth in various art classes and programs where Elizabeth was educated in art history and explored various mediums. Elizabeth's art won top honors in several art contests for her talents in sketching, painting and special recognition for her hand-made clay pieces. Elizabeth's commitment to continue her art journey was replaced by her love of family and raising her four children. Once her children were successfully sound in their education and careers; Elizabeth returned to her art enrolling in classes at the University of Louisville where she studied abroad. It was in Paris when Elizabeth fell in love with Impressionistic art. She spent time in Giveney; walked the paths of Monet, Cezanne, Degas, Renoir and Manet. Impressionist paintings were not only one of the largest influences in art history; the experiences in Paris forever changed Elizabeth. Her passion, love and commitment to art were enlightening. Elizabeth continued her travels through Italy crafting and continuing her education. Elizabeth sketched and painted daily. And still to this day Elizabeth references the many photographs from her travels as she creates her own oil painting masterpieces in her studio today. Elizabeth Smythe’s paintings hang in private collections around the globe. Her commissioned art can also be found in both private and public offices in many US States and in Washington DC. Elizabeth teaches oil painting on canvas to adults 17 years and older. Elizabeth's paintings and her greeting card art collections are available for purchase. Elizabeth has also been the owner and artist in other art business to include:

Smythe & Company
Offers hand-painted, world-renown Masterpieces re-created on pottery. The collections of pieces are each one-of-a-kind and there is very little inventory remaining. Contact Elizabeth for information about this limited collection. Very soon this website will feature a link to view and purchase Smythe & Company collection pieces. Paint Your Own Pottery, Inc. Elizabeth opened the very first ‘Paint Your Own Pottery’ studios in Louisville, KY. That studio was also a huge success and because Elizabeth wanted to stay focused on her students and on her own fine art painting on canvas, she sold her pottery studio.
