Steve was born in Robertson County, just west of Nashville, as the last generation of sharecropper families from the segregation years. As the oldest of 8 children during the 1950s and ‘60s, he
carried the influence of “soul food” cooking from his mother Bessie to Louisville, Ky where he became a
well-known caterer and owner of The Germantown Café on Goss Avenue.
As a native of Robertson County, Steve carried these food basics influenced by Bessie into his own style of cooking and created recipes that became part of his signature food style. Now retired from the food business, Steve still does some catering.

Although Kentuckians fought on both sides of the American Civil War, Kentucky was one of four slave states that remained in the Union. The Emancipation Proclamation did not apply to Kentucky because it didn’t leave the Union. Yet, when tens of thousands of enslaved Kentuckians joined the Union Army, both the soldiers and their family members were to be considered free. In many cases, they had to escape from their enslavers and make a long, potentially dangerous journey to the nearest enlistment place. The ‘We Fought for Our Freedom: Kentucky's African American Civil War Soldiers’ photo exhibit showcases 10 former enslaved men that fought with the Union Army's 108th U.S. Colored Infantry Regiment.
