The Conrad-Caldwell House Museum is located at the heart of Old Louisville, one of the largest Victorian neighborhoods in the nation. Situated at the corner of Magnolia Avenue and St James Court, the Museum stands as one of the finest buildings in the area. Remarkable in its completeness as a Victorian structure, this building was created with the finest craftsmanship and design, and contained all

the latest innovations for its time. It has been lovingly restored and brought back to life as a family home circa 1908, when the Caldwell family lived here. The mansion contains antiques appropriate to the era, including many of the original pieces from the Conrad and Caldwell families. We enjoy the continued involvement of the Caldwell family, one of the things which sets us apart from other historic homes, and makes it seem much more a “home” than a museum. As a non-profit organization with 501(c)3 status, The Conrad-Caldwell House Museum relies on your support in order to survive. While we are able to generate some income with our tours and rentals, we do ask that you consider making a donation to the Museum in order to ensure our continued success. Office hours are Tuesday - Saturday 10 - 4 and Sunday 12 - 4. Self-Guided Tours are Wednesday-Sunday between 12PM and 3:30PM. For general inquiries you can reach us at:

Some artifacts in the Conrad Caldwell House spark the reaction of "Wow!" 😍 Others spark more of a "Wow..." 😳 This doll somehow manages to do both!

Donated to the collection in 2004 by Virginia Caldwell, this bisque porcelain doll once belonged to Grace Caldwell Hall, who lived in the home. With its glass eyes that open when she's sat up and close when she's laid down, tufty feathered brows, pierced ears, a REAL HUMAN HAIR wig, and carefully jointed composition body, it’s a prime example of the famed “Dolly Face” style popular in the 1890s. One thing some eagle-eyed visitors spot are also her adorable Louis Vuitton boots!

Founded in Germany in 1839, Simon & Halbig became known for producing some of the finest bisque dolls of their era, prized today by collectors for their craftsmanship and lifelike detail. They were imperative in popularizing the "Dolly Face" style. Well...Whether you find her beautiful or a little unnerving, one thing is certain: she never fails to capture guests' attention!

in 1922, Gordon P. Caldwell was born!

Gordon was born here in Louisville, the second child of Walter and Gertrude Caldwell. A graduate of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the Speed Scientific School, Gordon also served in the United States Navy during World War II. He grew up visiting his grandparents, William and Elaine Caldwell at their home on St James Court. One story told often on our current tours is how Gordon and his sister Virginia spent dinner at their grandparents' home counting crystals on the chandelier.

Gordon married Mildred Jane Pritchett in 1946, after being introduced through unusual circumstances... Mildred Jane was attending Kentucky Home School (now KCD) and playing in a field hockey game. She got hit in the head with someone's stick, and was knocked out. Gordon, who didn't know Mildred Jane, rushed over to help. When she came to, he immediately said, "I want to meet her officially." They married, and ended up having three children-- Barb, Beth, and Ann.

Gordon remained connected to the Conrad-Caldwell House and Caldwell Tanks Company throughout the rest of his life. He devoted many years and lots of effort to restoring the mansion to reflect its early-1900s appearance, maintaining the family artifacts, and learning all he could about the house's history. For sixteen years, he volunteered as a tour guide at the museum, sharing stories of Louisville history and the Caldwell family legacy.

Although Gordon is no longer physically with us, his love and care for the home is felt every day here. His daughters, Beth and Barb, have taken on their father's duty in becoming regular and dedicated docents here. Let's all take his birthday to remember Gordon's lasting impact and spirit. Happy birthday! 🎂

Happy Mothers Day from all of us here at the Conrad Caldwell House. This photo shows Elaine Caldwell, the second lady of the house, on the sunporch with one of her grandchildren, either Gordon or Virginia. She was known to be a very involved and loving mother to her kids and grandkids. ❤

If you’re planning a summer trip to Louisville between **June 1 and August 1** make sure you’re using GPS before you hit the road! Interstate 65 will be closed during that time, which could REALLY change your route. Detours and traffic are expected, so relying on real-time GPS navigation will save you a lot of stress and confusion along the way.
The good news is that the Conrad-Caldwell House Museum will still be OPEN, and we have written out some alternative routes for you! Plan ahead, double-check your route, and get through the changes so your trip stays smooth and on schedule. We'll see you this Summer!

This is the story of an entire neighborhood losing its mind... all over some address mix-ups!
in 1898, the residents of central Old Louisville were dealing with some issues-- getting each others' mail, packages, and even visitors! St James , Belgravia, and Fountain courts were all using the same address system, and it caused constant confusion for a short while. Basically: late 19th century group chat drama. Check it out! 🗞📰
