The most popular black and white process of the 20th century was gelatin silver, in which the image consists of silver metal particles suspended in a gelatin layer. Gelatin silver papers are commercially manufactured by applying an emulsion of light-sensitive silver salts in gelatin to a sheet of paper coated with a layer of baryta, a white pigment mixed with gelatin. The sensitized paper, generally fiber-based, is exposed to light through a negative and then made visible in a chemical reducing solution. William Henry Fox Talbot introduced the basic chemical process in 1839, but the more complex gelatin silver process did not become the most common method of black-and-white darkroom photography until the late 1910s. Because the silver image is suspended in a gelatin emulsion that rests on a pigment-coated paper, gelatin silver can be sharply defined and highly detailed in comparison to platinum or palladium, in which the image is directly absorbed into the fibers of the paper.

The majority of prints in our collection are gelatin silver prints and we're often asked about the process, we appreciated the clarity and illustration of this Photography West definition.

"Holland Canal" (sometimes titled "Canal, Netherlands") is a famous example of Brett Weston's approach to nature photography. Taken with a large format 8x10 camera, this photograph demonstrates both Weston's interest in natural imagery and darkroom technique, here used to render the Dutch landscape in rich detail. The close cropping reveals the pristine reflection of the trees upon the water, while the softer focus trees in the background beckon.

You can see this image in person as part of our 25th Anniversary Show. The gallery is open 9-5 weekdays, late on First Fridays and by appointment.

This Bill Schwab photo of a frozen dog statue is a gallery favorite and has been featured in shows many times, including our current 25th Anniversary one.

Bill spent over 20 years taking photos at Detroit's Belle Isle Park capturing its graceful bridges and statuary in all seasons.

"Human vision can only detect individual moments, so by photographing with long exposures, during twilight or night time, I am able to capture a series of moments on a single piece of film, effectively creating a static image by compressing time, which moves the photograph toward the sublime. The movement of water will blur, clouds can streak, stars trace their arcs and falling rain creates a unique atmosphere. The resulting photograph has more of an elastic feeling, as if time were stretched and then snapped back into a single instant."

Rolfe Horn was the subject of the gallery's first show in 2001 and his "Docks, Barnegat Bay" is included in our current 25th Anniversary show.

John Wimberley was born in July 1945 in Bermuda. His photographs have appeared in nearly 100 exhibitions, multiple international publications, and are found in hundreds of public and private collections around the world, including ours.

His photo "Windows" is included in our 25th Anniversary show up through October.
