Garner Narrative gladly presents new paintings by Stephen Dorsett. Known recently for his photography and dioramas [Louisville Photo Biennial 2021, 2023; Garner Narrative 2024], Dorsett returns to the easel for his next inquiry into the heart of the anthropocene.

Stephen Dorsett has a B.S. in studio art from Murray State University, a M.A.T. in art education from Eastern Kentucky University, and a M.A. in school counseling from the University of the Cumberlands. Dorsett lives in Lexington, KY.

Dorsett’s exhibition continues through June 28.

Artist Statement

Manufactured Landscapes is an exhibit of 13 acrylic paintings featuring commercial products and landscapes. I am interested in this subject because it highlights the distinction between nature and the manufactured items derived from it. Though consumer products are composed of materials extracted from the earth, they are transformed into objects that no longer belong to it. They are of nature yet unnatural.
I use humor to grapple with this paradox. Spring Water imagines an enormous plastic bottle hovering in the sky, pouring out a river. Honey Bears takes this idea further with a giant bear-shaped honey bottle feeding a living bear. In Harvest Orange, a spray-paint can rains autumn colors onto a summer tree.

With these images, I question the relationship between human industry and the natural world. Will the gulf between them continue to widen, or will a mutually beneficial relationship take root? These paintings hold that uncertainty.

Despite everything, it's still spring.

Joyce Garner shares spacious yet pointed opinions about current events (local to global), climate change, and hopes and fears for the future in 4 new large format paintings.

Joyce Garner is a contemporary narrative painter and garner narrative gallery co-founder (2011).

She is the Kentucky South Arts 2021 State Fellow, with solo shows at the Thyen-Clark Cultural Center (IN); the Owensboro Museum of Fine Art (KY); the Carnegie (KY); Indiana University Southeast; the University of Evansville Melvin Peterson Gallery; the Archabbey Library Gallery at St. Meinrad; Germantown Performing Arts Centre (TN); Krempp Gallery of Jasper Arts Center (IN); the Gateway Regional Art Center (KY); Oakland City University (IN); the Headley-Whitney Museum (KY); and various galleries in Indiana, Georgia, Kentucky, Maryland, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Tennessee. She earned a B.S. from the University of Kentucky.

Several of Garner's large format works were recently acquired by the Owensboro Museum of Fine Art, Kentucky's second largest art museum. OMFA's Permanent Collection documents the cultural history of Kentucky from the early 1800’s to the present.
