What is a crazy quilt?

Crazy quilts were a popular trend in the late 19th century, often used as “parlor pieces”. The name “crazy” derives from the unique, irregularly-shaped patchwork that used a variety of fabrics, patterns, and decorative embroidery. The two crazy quilts on display in the LHS Museum are fantastic examples of this Victorian-era craft. The Civil War quilt, made by Lizzie McAllister (1848-1895), features the elaborate embroidery that distinguished the crazy quilt trend. In the same period, Carrie Kimball (1858-1894) made a quilt using scraps of luxurious silk, another prominent feature of this style of quilting.

The Museum is open 9-4 on Tuesdays and Wednesdays and 9-12 on Saturdays. Admission is free.

The Lovell Historical Society and Kezar Lake Watershed Association are partnering to offer a
$6,000 full-time summer internship in 2026. Work will be spread evenly between the two non-
profits.

The internship is available to college students or recent high school graduates with
matriculation plans for Fall of 2026. Strong organizational skills, computer skills, and an ability
to work independently are preferred, as is a strong interest in working with the local community.

Candidates must submit a cover letter and resume, with names of references. No phone calls please. After all applications are reviewed, a select number will be asked to participate in a phone interview. A selection will be made by committee within two weeks of the deadline. The application deadline is April 15, 2026 and candidates should mail or email their application to: Lovell Historical Society, P.O. Box 166, Lovell, ME 04051 or [email protected]. The Jeremiah Chandler House (1820)

Built by Revolutionary War veteran Jeremiah Chandler, this Federal-style farmhouse features original wide board floors, wainscoting, and century-old cedar trees. Famed painter Eastman Johnson was born here in 1824.

Lovingly restored by Shoo Hale, the property now blends history with whimsy — complete with stunning gardens, a sleeping porch, and an 1830s church steeple.
