a tea party-
written in honor of Lea County Museum Timeless Tea Event
by Juliet Danielle

may first
and it’s raining
the kind my mom would stand at the window
say good
the garden needs it

I'm making tea I didn’t plan to make
thinking about her
the way I always do
when it rains on the first of may

I used to love tea parties
the way you love things at six
before you know they take effort
and a choice
to show up

I grew up thinking the magic
was in the occasion
the tiny cups, the dressed-up part
the pretending

I didn’t know someone
had to build that
didn’t know I was watching her
do exactly that
every single day

the candle already lit when you walked in
plants everywhere
cookies in the oven
the house smelling like itself
the table set like it mattered
because to her
it did

everything she owns comes in every color
but she has always said orange is her favorite
I've never cared much for orange
but when she says it
something in me knows exactly what she means

growing up
I'd sit on the edge of her bed
watching her get ready
she’d be in something flowery
and I’d have borrowed her lipstick
feeling real pretty
just from being near her

she’d listen as I talked
glancing at me in the mirror
the hum of the tv
we’d laugh and I'd linger

because you know there will come moments
where you’d give anything
to just show up
sit down
have the afternoon

that’s the thing about the women who raise us
you can show up undone or afraid
in your good dress or your everyday jeans
empty handed or with something small
she’ll look at you and mean it
when she says
I'm so glad you came

she’ll be the one at the end
fixing you a plate to take
soapy hands and a tired smile
don’t worry about it, darling
stay as long as you’d like

I'm twenty eight now wondering
if she was ever scared at my age
if some mornings she looked at the dress
sighed
and put it on anyway

I think that’s what I didn’t understand
when I was small and borrowing her lipstick
that showing up can be an act of will
that the table doesn’t set itself
and neither do we

today she’ll set the table
and I won’t be there
but I’ll be here
making tea on a rainy morning
knowing she’ll call sometime in the afternoon
and ask if I want her to make another
