Happy World Bee Day!

With over 20,000 bee species in the world, there is an endless amount to learn about the diversity and life histories for this amazing group. Here is a picture of a Texas great plains bee that is very apt for Texas Tech University – bedecked in red and black for good measure! This bee is Oreopasites a tiny yet mighty member of the bee family Apidae – it is only 5 – 6 mm in length. Unlike many bee species, this bee is not really a pollinator. It still needs nectar and feeds its young pollen like all bee species; however it has just found another way to accomplish this. Oreopasites young are picky eaters and only feed on the pollen of globemallows. Instead of visiting individual globemallow flowers to gather the pollen into a nice compact pollen “bread” for its young, female Oreopasites instead let others do the work for them. Our hero, or maybe villain, searchers for another bee species, Calliopsis subalpina, which also only uses pollen of globemallows for its young. Once located the Oreopasites follows unsuspecting bee back to its ground nest. When the Calliopsis subalpina leaves its burrow to forage again, Oreopasites sneaks into the nest, deposits its egg on the already made pollen “bread” and leaves. The egg of Oreopasites hatches quickly the larva kills the egg or larva of the Calliopsis subalpina and begins to eat the pollen meal itself. A bona fide “red raider!"

đź’ĄCOMING SOONđź’Ą

Ghost Army: The Combat Con Artists of World War II explores the story of the US Army’s 23rd Headquarters Special Troops, a top-secret unit who waged war with inflatable tanks and vehicles, fake radio traffic, sound effects, and even phony generals. This carefully selected group of artists, engineers, professional soldiers, and draftees—armed with nothing heavier than .50 caliber machine guns—saved thousands of lives and played an important part in Allied victory in World War II.

Ghost Army will run May 24 – August 16, 2026.
