For thousands of years, across hundreds of generations, people have come to Lubbock Lake. Located in the southernmost reaches of the Great Plains of North America, the waters of this ancient lake nourished a rich and abundant ecosystem that in turn, provided food, shelter, tools, and clothing to those who traveled across it or came to settle here. Clovis Age hunter-gatherers, who followed the Anci

ent Bison and Colombian Mammoth, the Apache and Comanche nations, and the founding of a modern city are each a part of the history of this National Historic Landmark that is one of the premier archaeological and research sites in North America. From Billions to a Fraction🐾🌾

It’s hard to imagine today, but billions of prairie dogs once roamed across North America. In 1901, one continuous prairie dog town stretched from Clarendon all the way to San Angelo—around 250 miles long and 100–150 miles wide. It was one of the largest concentrations of mammals on the continent.🌎

Today, only 2–4% of those historic populations remain. The biggest culprits?
• Habitat fragmentation🌱
• Sylvatic plague, introduced in the early 1900s
• Widespread poisoning campaigns beginning in 1917

By understanding this history, we can better protect the prairie dog colonies that still remain—and the many species that depend on them.

Starting June 2nd, the Landmark trails will open at 7 a.m. for the summer months.

Engineers of the Grasslands🌱🌿

Prairie dogs are true ecosystem engineers. Their digging helps aerate the soil, cycle nutrients, and support healthier, more diverse plant communities.

Their colonies create pockets of habitat that benefit everything from insects to birds to mammals—shaping the land in ways that ripple across the entire ecosystem.
