We had such fun yesterday as several young builders came and worked with us to create their very own military base to take home! We discovered the difference between an airfield and a base, learned about all the things a base can have, and thought through how our glider infantry men and our gliders would move around our bases.
We also had the opportunity to watch many planes take off and land as we worked!

Honoring the Fallen of Operation Neptune

Forty-eight American Glider Pilots were Killed in Action during the Normandy Invasion. Blosville Temporary American Cemetery served as resting place for many before their permanent interment in France or back home in the United States. Flight Officer Howard P. Parks took this image of the marker for his friend, Flight Officer Norman T. Lund. Lund was returned to the United States for interment in Montana.

Long May She Wave

Flag Day commemorates the adoption by the Second Continental Congress of the Flag of the United States on June 14, 1777. The date was proclaimed in 1916 by President Woodrow Wilson and later officially established as National Flag Day by an Act of Congress in 1949.

Each American World War II Glider Pilot wore the flag as they flew their gliders into the combat zone. These armbands, also called brassards, were used to quickly identify Allied personnel.

Maintaining a Foothold in Normandy - La Londe Glider Operation

CG-4A gliders land on dirt airstrip carved from a Normandy farm on June 10, 1944. The airstrip, known as LaLonde, was located near where Allied gliders landed on June 6 and 7, 1944. Over a three-day period, CG-4A gliders brought in men, equipment, and supplies to build this airstrip as well as troops and supplies needed for the active combat going on in the area.

Rolls of steel matting at edge of airstrip, would later provide a surface for heavier aircraft.

Glider Pilots Move Out in Normandy

A group of Glider Pilots, Flight Officers Arnold Wursten and Robert Wickham in foreground, have gathered at a rendezvous spot and are preparing to move with the Glider Infantry after their landings in Normandy. Wursten and Wickham were with the 441st Troop Carrier Group / 302nd Troop Carrier Squadron and their companions were likely 439th and 441st TCG glider pilots.

D-Day plus 1, Gliders Continue to Pour into Normandy

Gliders pass over an English harbor near Waymouth on June 7, 1944. Missions Galveston and Hackensack on the second day of Operation Neptune carried in crucial Allied troops and supplies as invasion forces moved into the Cherbourg Peninsula. 152 CG-4A and 47 Horsa gliders were used for these two missions.

Join the Silent Wings Museum as we commemorate the anniversary of the Normandy Invasion. D-Day reminds us to reflect on the service and sacrifice of the Glider Pilots who flew unarmed gliders into landing zones deep into enemy territory as seaborne troops stormed the beaches of Normandy. We honor the men who flew these missions and the men they carried into the combat zones on that fateful day.
