Myitkyina, Burma May 17, 1944

The American 5307th Composite Unit (Provisional), better known as “Merrill’s Marauders” were a tough, independent group of U.S. commandos who proved themselves many times over during their time in Burma. These men captured a key military objective, the Japanese airfield at Myitkyina, and called for equipment and supplies to help hold the airfield and improve it for Allied aircraft.

The 1st Air Commandos sent ten gliders loaded with the 879th Airborne Engineer Aviation Battalion and equipment into the area, including CA-1 crawler-tractors, food rations, gas and oil, and drinking water. Immediately upon landing, equipment was unloaded and used to clear debris and improve the airfield surface for incoming gliders.

American Glider Pilots, at unidentified airstrip in Burma, prepare to fly into Myitkyina.

United States Army Air Forces creates the Air Medal

Executive Order 9158 created the Air Medal for the United States Army Air Forces, effective May 11, 1942, with awards retroactive to September 8, 1939. Awarded for single acts of heroism or meritorious achievement while participating in aerial flight, this medal holds special significance for the American Glider Pilot.

The general original criteria for the award stated that 25 operational flights, during which exposure to enemy fire was expected, earned an Air Medal. Criteria were adjusted to fit theaters of operation and situations.

It is important to note that Glider Pilots earned an Air Medal for each single glider flight in an operation mission.
