We were happy to open up the gates for the Wichita Gem and Mineral Club exploration this past Saturday - these guys really appreciated Roy and Clara Millers' collection, and we all had a good time identifying the rocks and their origins. Thanks for the visit!

On Saturday, June 17, 2017, eleven members of the Wichita Gem & Mineral Club enjoyed a rock hunt led by Von Rothenberger of Lucas, Kansas. The four main stops on the hunt included Millers Park in Lucas; Mullender Hill in Valley Township, Osborne County; Sand Mound in Covert Township, Osborne County; and the Hachmeister Pit in Natoma Township, Osborne County. Lucas artist Erika Nelson gave the group a presentation of Millers Park and the Garden of Eden and the group took a half hour to whisk through the town's other attractions and businesses. Lunch was later enjoyed beneath a ring of ancient oak trees in the ghost community of Vincent in Valley Township, Osborne County. The tour began at 10AM and ended at 4:30PM in temperatures approaching 100 degrees, but a good time was had by all. Along the County Summits Scenic Backway and the Round Mound Heritage Loop.

Whoop! Lots of progress in a short period of time, with some amazing help... Dug 42 holes, set 12 terminal posts and 30 line posts, mixed 55 80-pound bags of concrete, and enjoyed a beautiful two days of cooperative weather. What a crew: Adam Hickman manning the bobcat, Larry and Doug Hickman on concrete mixing with George Wolbert and Danny Steinle, Les Schneider setting guidelines, squaring the site, setting posts, and directing crew, Lynn Schneider on concrete and fill and digging, and Erika with the (non-evil) master plan, site marking, dirt clearing, and guideline setting.

Anyone know what building this might be a replia of? Part of the Miller's Park pieces, where they often focused on Colorado mountains and buildings... so far, not finding a match! This would have been built in the 1930s, 1940s, and Roy's interpretation of something he admired... Colorado folks, any ideas?

Help Needed! We're rebuilding Miller's Park mountains, and this one is in dire need of material - looking for approx. 150 barite roses, anywhere in the 2" to 3" range. They're commonly found in Oklahoma and Kansas... Any and all material will help us rebuild!!

Welcome back to Lucas, Kohler Foundation folks! The moving of the sculptures was a pretty big deal, and now the next phase starts - restoration. First four pieces have been moved to the workspace for some long-time-comin' TLC.

The rock sculptures, built in the early 1900's by Roy and Clara Miller of Lucas, were sold and moved to Hays after each of their deaths. Over the last four decades, the sculptures have set unattended and some have deteriorated greatly.
