Prisoners were forced to construct much of the camp and its furnishings.

Master blacksmith Jan Liwacz was arrested in October 1939 for burning an effigy of Adolf Hi**er. In June 1940, he was deported to Auschwitz, where he was forced to produce ironwork — including these objects — for Commandant Rudolf Höss.

In the 1930s, Hugo Boss became a key supplier of uniforms for the SS, SA, and Wehrmacht. While Hugo Ferdinand Boss himself did not design them, his company mass-produced some of the most iconic — and infamous — uniforms of the N**i regime, including the black SS uniforms associated with designs by Karl Diebitsch and Walter Heck.

These contracts helped secure the company’s financial stability during a period of economic crisis, while also tying its legacy to one of history’s darkest chapters.

Decades later, in 1999, the company faced renewed scrutiny when lawyers in the United States, representing Holocaust survivors, brought legal claims related to its use of forced labor during World War II — part of a broader effort to hold companies accountable for their role under the N**i regime.

Confronting this history posed a significant challenge. It also underscored the importance of acknowledging past involvement and taking responsibility in the present.

In these images, a group of SS men and female auxiliaries from the Auschwitz garrison relax and socialize at the Solahütte recreation center, just 30 km from the gas chambers.

These candlesticks belonged to the Great Synagogue of Oświęcim, which the N**is ransacked and demolished following the German occupation of the town.

Once home to 30 synagogues and prayer houses, Oświęcim today has only one.

This artifact is part of the collection of the Auschwitz Jewish Center and is displayed at Auschwitz Exhibition.

We do not know the name of the owner of this shoe or where she came from.

There is a small chance she survived the deportation, but most likely, within hours of arriving at Auschwitz, she was murdered, and her shoes were thrown onto a pile with countless others.

➡️ We are currently working on the next phase of the exhibition alongside the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum continuing our mission to preserve and share the story of one of humanity’s darkest chapters.

In just one month, nearly 3,000 people were murdered in Auschwitz alone by N**i Germany.
