Join us at the Lynchburg Museum for First Friday and discover the story of Lucille Chaffin Kent, known as “Lynchburg’s Amelia Earhart” and one of Lynchburg’s first licensed female pilots and a fixture at Preston Glenn Airport (now Lynchburg Regional Airport) in the mid-20th century..

Learn about her incredible place in Lynchburg’s aviation history - and create your own airplane during this fun, hands-on activity for all ages!

The Lynchburg Museum & Visitor Center will be CLOSED, Wednesday, June 24, 2026 through Sunday, June 28, 2026, while museum staff and volunteers complete a comprehensive reorganization and inventory of its permanent collection.

The collection is comprised of over 100,000 items from three centuries of local history and is housed in multiple locations, including the Old Court House, Point of Honor, and City Hall.

The Museum & Visitor Center will reopen as usual on Wednesday, July 1, 2026, at 10:00 AM.

The Lynchburg Museum & Visitor Center will be open Friday, June 19.

However, we will be closed Saturday, June 20, as our staff works at the 41st Annual Batteau Festival and the 26th Annual Juneteenth Celebration at Miller Park.

We encourage everyone to visit us at these events!

The Lynchburg Museum & Visitor Center will reopen as usual Sunday, June 21 at 12:00pm.

Join us at the Lynchburg Museum & Visitor Center for June First Fridays, on June 5, 2026, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. ⚛🧪🚀

Explore our special pop-up exhibit about the fascinating history of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) in Lynchburg, focusing on the Hill City innovations and inventions that shaped the nation–and even the world. From the town’s first water works that pumped water almost 250 feet above the James River, to the city’s leadership in powering the next human mission to Mars, STEM has a long and surprising history in Lynchburg.

"From the James River to Mars: Lynchburg's STEM Legacy" is free and open to the public. The exhibit and reception are co-sponsored by the Lynchburg Museum System and the Future Focus Foundation.

Part II of "Lynchburg & The Vietnam War" opens this evening, Friday, May 1, 2026, with a free public reception from 5:00 to 7:00 PM. Please join us!

The Lynchburg Museum System invites visitors deeper into the human connections of the Vietnam War. The heart of the exhibit continues to honor the 27 Lynchburg men killed in action, alongside items from POW David Harker and artifacts from local Vietnam veterans. While the exhibit continues to center and honor local service members and their sacrifices, Part II broadens the story to reveal how the war was lived both abroad and at home.

New displays highlight the Combined Action Program (CAP) through Dr. Ed Palm’s wartime photographs, the service of women through Army Nurse Marilyn Brooks and Lt. Col. Esther Miller, and the journey of Gen. Nguyen Chanh Thi and how our community became the safe harbor for his family’s resettlement. Additional sections explore the war’s presence in daily life through music, letters, and media, tracing how distant events shaped the city in real time.
