Years ago, Major General Max Guggenheimer shared his memories of military service, offering a firsthand account of a remarkable period in our nation's history. He was also someone who cared deeply about Presbyterian Cemetery and its future.

We are grateful for those who have invested their time, wisdom, and passion in preserving this special place and ensuring its stories continue to be shared. Today, we're honored to preserve not only the history found among the monuments, but also the voices of those who helped steward this historic cemetery.

We invite you to watch this special oral history from Max himself and reflect on a life of service, leadership, and remembrance. https://youtu.be/gH9nTFVGSB4?si=NG_AICryx4iLfMKm

As it is National Purple Heart Day, LHF honors those who have been wounded or killed to protect our country.

One story from LYH’s past involvement in ensuring our country’s freedom is that of the Lynchburg Musketeers, formed in 1915 originally as a local militia. The Musketeers became known as "Company L" and served as border control in Texas in 1916. When the United States entered World War I in 1917, the Musketeers became Doughboys. 65 of the 102 officers were deployed to France in 1918. In October of that year, Company L attacked the Germans. After the war was over, 23 Musketeers had died, 33 were wounded, and 7 were gassed.

We honor and thank them for their sacrificial service for the United States.
