Once arrested, our “inmates” have 20 minutes to raise $20 to make parole. 🔒💰

IT’S JAIL-N-BAIL DAY!!! 🎉😂

The wait is over, the jail is ready, and the Baker County Historical Society is looking for a few good “criminals” tonight at the Baker County Fair!

Got a friend or family member who’s been getting a little too comfortable lately? 😏 For just $5, you can have them “ARRESTED” and sent straight to our Jail-N-Bail cell! Once they’re behind bars, they’ll have 20 minutes to raise $20 to make parole.

And remember… NO ONE IS SAFE! 🚔 We’ve got local officials, community leaders, and even our own BCHS Board of Directors joining in the fun!

🌳 Tuesday Tip: A Family Name Doesn't Always Tell the Whole Story!

When researching African American ancestry, particularly families who experienced slavery, tracing family connections can present unique challenges. One of the biggest misconceptions is that a formerly enslaved person's last name automatically identifies the individual who last enslaved them.

The truth is, surnames can tell a much more complicated story!

Following emancipation, formerly enslaved individuals used or adopted family names for many different reasons. Some retained names that had been used within their families for generations, while others chose names reflecting family relationships, personal identity, or meaningful connections to their past.

🔎 Here's a genealogy research tip: Don't limit your search to one surname or one former enslaver. Explore census records, marriage documents, Freedmen's Bureau records, probate files, and other historical sources. Comparing these records may help uncover family connections that aren't immediately obvious.

📜 Remember: A shared surname doesn't necessarily mean two families were related, and a different surname doesn't mean they weren't!

Every name has a history, and every family deserves to have its story discovered and preserved.

Tuesday Tip: Your Ancestors May Have Stayed Put, But the Boundaries Didn't!

Have you ever searched for an ancestor in a particular county or state, only to discover there's no record of them living there? The answer might be hiding in a little geography lesson!

Throughout American history, county lines, state borders, and territorial boundaries have changed countless times. A family could have lived in the same home for generations, yet appeared in records from several different jurisdictions!

🔎 Here's a genealogy research trick: When you hit a dead end, pull out a historical map! Compare the boundaries from the time your ancestors lived there with today's maps. You might discover that the records you're searching for are actually filed in a completely different county or state.

And don't forget about Baker County! Our own county was established in 1861 from a portion of New River County. If you're researching Baker County ancestors who lived here before 1861, you may need to explore records from New River County or earlier jurisdictions.

Sometimes finding your ancestors isn't about searching harder—it's about knowing WHERE to look!
