, June 15, 1752. Benjamin Franklin Flies a Kite. Ben Franklin famously sent a kite aloft to observe the connections between lightning and electricity. It was apparently a “shock heard round the world” judging from this Meiji-era woodblock print created in Japan in 1868, titled Furankurin to kaminari no zu (“Franklin and thunder and lightning”). In Shinto mythology, Kaminari was the god of storms.

, June 14, 1777, Betsy Ross’s flag was adopted by Continental Congress. At the request of George Washington, Philadelphia seamstress Betsy Ross designed the first American flag with thirteen red and white stripes, and an equal number of stars in a circle on a blue field. In this c.1917 painting by Percy Moran, Ross is shown displaying her handiwork to Washington.

The first African American to sit on the high court, Thurgood Marshall had headed the NAACP’s Legal Defense and Education Fund, for which he had won many battles against segregation. He was nominated to the Supreme Court by President Lyndon Johnson during the civil-rights struggles of the 1960s and served until 1991.

, June 13, 1986, beloved American clarinetist and bandleader, Benny Goodman died at the age of 77. Nicknamed the “King of Swing” by Time Magazine in 1937, Goodman's bands started the careers of many jazz musicians. During an era of racial segregation, he led some of the first integrated jazz groups, The Benny Goodman Trio and Quartet. In 1935, Pianist Teddy Wilson, an African American, first appeared in the Benny Goodman Trio's performance at the Congress Hotel in Chicago, Illinois. He later added Lionel Hampton, who would later form his own band, to the Benny Goodman Quartet. Goodman once said, “If a guy’s got it, let him give it. I’m selling music, not prejudice.”
