In 1939, Lily Tomlin was born in Detroit, Michigan. Tomlin started as a stand up comedian in the late 1960s, then a broadway, television, and film actor. From a comedy show called “Laugh-In” to The West Wing, Tomlin is a remarkably versatile talent. A favorite character Lily developed is “Ernestine” from Laugh-In, a nosy telephone operator who bombasted her customers with snorts and sarcasm. During my crazy Star Wars phase, I painted Ernestine as a storm trooper.

August 29, 1958, Michael Joseph Jackson was born. The “King of Pop”, singer, songwriter, dancer, actor, and curiosity. His popularity remains global, even post mortem. Some interesting facts on MJ: He wanted to be Spider-Man, even trying to purchase Marvel Comics. He was bald. He had a hairline permanently tattooed to help camouflage the fact under wigs. Jackson did not invent the moonwalk, though he perfected it. In order to stand at a 45-degree angle in his “Smooth Criminal” video, he patented special shoes with a slot in the heels that hook to retractable pegs in the floor. He patented it to keep others from using it, not for profit. The patent expired in 2005. Jackson’s memorial service was watched by over 2.5 billion viewers worldwide.

Patrick Alan Lilley (Butch Patrick) was born this day, in 1953. Better known as Eddie Munster of “The Munsters” a TV ‘fantasy situation comedy’. Patrick won the role out of 500 other boys vying for the spot. He claims he had a lot of experience, which may explain his success, but he also admitted that the fangs in the show were his real teeth. “My eyeteeth were so bad, that even when I closed my mouth they stuck out.”
