Don't miss this FREE enrichment opportunity for 4th graders through high schoolers on 3/15. It's a day of high quality skill-building workshops for students, divided by age and experience level. No experience necessary!
Public speaking and argument skills build confidence, empathy, and set the foundation for productive dialogue as students grow into adulthood (and we all know the world needs more people who can disagree in productive, healthy ways).
LUNCH PROVIDED!!! Please feel free to reach out directly with any questions πŸ§‘πŸ’™πŸ§‘πŸ’™ Some age groups are filling up, so register as soon as possible.

From Friday, February 7 to Sunday, February 9, 2025, two Pepperdine debate teams competed at the 2025 Social Justice Debates National Championships. Judges for the event included scholars, lawyers, social workers, and advocates for housing reform.

After three days of competition, Pepperdine debaters Leilaini Frailich (Senior, Political Science) and Liana Chekrygin (First Year, Business Administration) made Pepperdine’s first-ever appearance in the Open Division Quarter-Finals, and Chase Jackson (Senior, Economics Major) and Hanmo Yang (First Year, Finance Major) placed second in the Novice Division after another historic run to the Novice Championship Round. Pepperdine debaters received several individual speaker awards as well. Chase was ranked second across all divisions and first in the Novice Division. Hanmo was ranked 4th across all divisions and 2nd in the Novice Division. Liana was ranked 10th among all novice speakers.
We are so proud of all of the debaters who participated in the Social Justice Debates Series this season.
When one wins, we all win πŸ’™πŸ§‘πŸ’™πŸ§‘πŸ’™πŸ§‘

THIS is why we do what we do! As part of our Let's Argue program, which serves elementary-high school students, Pepperdine Debate hosts several free workshops and events to train high school students every year. Elyanna has not missed an event in 2 years and was even crowned champion at our most recent high school tournament. Yesterday, this 16 year old dynamo demonstrated her confidence and persuasive power by speaking on behalf of members of our community on the brink of eviction and homelessness because of price-gouging and illegal evictions in the wake of the fires. Elyanna worked with our Director of Debate on her remarks and was supported by Pepperdine students - Assistant Student Director, Ashleigh, and Let's Argue Coach, Miriam, at the LA City Council Meeting. Pepperdine Debate is so proud to see Elyanna taking her skills beyond the classroom. She is already doing amazing things, and we know this is just the beginning!

This past weekend, our team had the opportunity to travel to the Vanderbilt Global Free Speech Summit, where they placed 4th!
The team presented a plan to bifurcate entertainment and information streams on social media, they also were able to enjoy educational opportunities like visiting the Grand Ole Opry and the Museum of African American History.
They heard from some amazing speakers, such as Masih Alinejad, an Iranian Journalist and Women's Rights Activist.
Audrey Lang, Taiwan's first Digital Minister, was interviewed by Jonas Parello-Plenser, the Executive Director of the Alliance of Democracies Foundation.

This past weekend, Pepperdine Debate had great success at the Civic Debate tournament hosted by San Francisco State University.
The topic of the debate was "To achieve housing justice, the United States should focus on the root causes of homelessness rather than focusing on providing immediate permanent housing and supportive services."
Pepperdine fielded three teams, all of whom won at least one of three rounds with two of our teams winning with a 2-1 record.
Congratulations to our teams and their awards:
Ellie Scoggins - 8th place novice speaker.
Hanmo Yang- 2nd place novice speaker and 7th place overall speaker out of 86 participants.
It was both of these debaters first tournament.

This weekend, the Pepperdine Waves Debate Executive Board participated in three days of leadership training. The student leaders expanded their repertoire of skills as they earned a Conflict Resolution Fundamentals certification from the Peaceful Leaders Academy, and Title IX certification from the state of California. This was a great chance for everyone to come together after a summer apart and prepare for a productive year of debate!
