It happened once before a long, long time ago…

When the American Locomotive Company finished the first of Union Pacific Railroad’s “Big Boys” in 1941 delivery route had to be devised for the trip to Omaha, Nebraska. At that time, these articulateds were too heavy and oversized to be routed over the Nickel Plate Road.

Decades later, the Nickel Plate had continued its growth and infrastructure improvements, moving a 4-8-8-4 through Cleveland was no more than paying attention to whatever speed restrictions were required for the move.

The No. 4012 was built in November 1941 and retired in 1962. This 1964 move photographed at the 55th Street Yards in Cleveland, Ohio was to F. Nelson Blount’s original Steamtown in Bellows Falls, Vermont. No. 4012 was later moved to the National Park Service’s new Steamtown National Historic Site in Scranton, Pennsylvania with the rest of the collection in 1984.

Small wonder then that Union Pacific and Norfolk Southern have chosen to take Big Boy No. 4014 on its eastern tour via the the great New York, Chicago & St. Louis Railroad!

BIG BOY No. 4014 TOUR! Union Pacific is bringing the world’s largest operating steam locomotive across Ohio! Union Pacific’s famed Big Boy No. 4014 will journey to the East Coast for the first time as part of a historic coast-to-coast tour to celebrate America’s 250th anniversary. Mark your calendar, the Ohio cities, dates and times are below!

This tour will include several stops in Ohio — and a once in a lifetime day long celebration in Fostoria, OH on the return trip in July!

This is the first time Big Boy has steamed across the Mississippi River and into the Ohio Valley since it was built in Schenectady, New York, and delivered to Union Pacific Railroad in 1941. The tour will operate across the Norfolk Southern network, marking a historic collaboration between two of the nation’s storied railroads and bringing the legendary locomotive back to communities that helped power America’s industrial rise.
