Join us *tomorrow* during your lunch break for a deep dive into what has gone into preserving Esherick's Studio!

Wharton Esherick’s Home and Studio was a forty-year undertaking for the artist, and the building developed over time based on changing needs. Wharton Esherick broke ground on a sculptor’s studio in 1926 and put the finishing touches on what was by then a home in 1966 with a muraled silo. To help celebrate the Studio’s Centennial year, join us for a conversation with WEM’s Building Preservation Director Andrew Gustine about the ways this National Historic Landmark has continued to change over the past 60 years and the persistent preservation efforts around this building!

This is a free online event with Q&A at the end. Just register to receive the link to join us!

Calling all fellow architecture fans!

Join us next week for a talk with William Whitaker that explores architectural regionalism as an animating force in Philadelphia modernism. Whitaker’s research encompasses famed designers who worked with local materials and indigenous architectural forms—Louis Kahn, Frank Miles Day, and Wharton Esherick among others. His work also accounts for geological and social factors determining the availability of materials and immigration of skilled workers that shaped built expression.

In 1926, Wharton Esherick broke ground on a new studio, a building that is now an icon of handcrafted modern design and the centerpiece of the WEM campus. The site Esherick chose was on a slope of Valley Forge Mountain, amidst sandstone outcroppings and young forests that were overgrowing old farms. There, he and a crew of tradesmen raised a stone structure with a profound sense of rootedness in local geography and architecture. Drawn from the WEM collections, "Pennsylvania Modern" presents drawings, photographs, and archives bearing witness to Esherick’s eye to the local as he began one of his most magnetic creations.

Our spring exhibition "Pennsylvania Modern: Regionalism and the Wharton Esherick Studio" is open through June 7th. You can see it in person in our Visitor Center or get a peek at it online. Be sure to reserve a spot on a tour in advance to take a walk through the Studio after you check out the exhibition!
