🎨✨ Last week we welcomed students from the French class for a special visit en français!
They explored the exhibition, shared reflections, and discussed artworks entirely in French — bringing language, culture, and creativity together in the gallery space.

We are grateful for opportunities to support interdisciplinary learning and to serve as a site where language study, critical inquiry, and the visual arts intersect.

We hope you join us this Thursday at the Alva de Mars Megan Chapel Art Center for an exciting program called “The Eighteenth Variation.” The presentation starts at 4:30 p.m. and features the famous Eighteenth Variation of Rachmaninoff’s Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini, and its use in films, television, and other media by Professor Steven Swayne. ⁣

Dr. Steven Swayne, a professor at Dartmouth College, teaches courses in art music from the 1700s to the present day, Opera, American musical theater, Russian music, and American music. He has received fellowships from the Woodrow Wilson National Fellowship Foundation and the National Endowment for the Humanities. His articles have appeared in The Sondheim Review, the Journal of the Royal Musical Association, American Music, Studies in Musical Theatre, the Indiana Theory Review, and The Musical Quarterly. He has written two books—How Sondheim Found His Sound (University of Michigan Press, 2005) and Orpheus in Manhattan: William Schuman and the Shaping of America’s Musical Life (Oxford University Press, 2011). He is also an accomplished concert pianist.⁣

We are pleased to open the gallery to off-campus visitors for this event but do require that masks be worn at all times. Please review the college’s visitor policy at www.anselm.edu/covid for up-to-date COVID-19 guidelines. This event is presented as part of the Fine Arts Series, a collaboration between the Chapel Art Center and the Fine Arts Department at Saint Anselm College.⁣

Working in wood and paint, Nick Hollibaugh builds constructions that engage with our understanding of memory, landscape, and structure. Meticulous in their ex*****on and poetic in their simplicity, his pieces blur the line between painting and sculpture.

Born and raised in Indiana, many of Hollibaugh’s sculptural works evoke the farm landscapes and barns of his youth. Horizontal bands of wood painted in subtly shifting colors recall a sky viewed across flat farmland, while the familiar shape of a pitched roof, paired with Hollibaugh’s precise craftsmanship, reference the simple lines of Shaker barns and furniture. Drawing from his experience as a furniture designer, Hollibaugh exerts precise control over shadow, color, and dimension, arranging each element in accordance with a mysterious, dreamlike logic.

Nick Hollibaugh earned a BFA from the Herron School of Art at Indiana University and an MFA from the Rhode Island School of Design. He lives in Massachusetts with his wife and two daughters. Hollibaugh is represented by Cade Tompkins Projects of Providence, Rhode Island.
