This Week in Banksy History ❤️ May 2010, Chinatown, Boston

The mural appeared showing the phrase "FOLLOW YOUR DREAMS" with a worker standing nearby as a large red "CANCELLED" stamp covered the message. Created in the aftermath of the financial crisis, the piece was widely interpreted as a commentary on economic hardship, inequality, and the growing disconnect between the promise of success and the reality many people faced.

More than fifteen years later, the mural remains one of Banksy's most recognizable American works, continuing to spark conversations about ambition, opportunity, and who gets left behind when the system fails.

This one is a museum favorite. Do you think the message is more relevant today than it was in 2010? 🤔

More relevant today?

This Week in Banksy History ✨May 2005, British Museum’s Roman Britain Gallery, London

Wait, how long did the British Museum have that ancient looking tablet?

This piece, titled “Peckham Rock,” showed a primitive caveman pushing a shopping cart past a wounded buffalo. It showed up one rainy day in May 2005 overnight in the exhibit alongside legitimate works after Banksy stealthily installed it.

Complete with an official looking museum label and fake accession number, the work stayed on display for three days before staff realized it had never actually belonged there.

Newspapers at the time mocked the museum for the stunt, with headlines calling the exhibit “a bit wobbly” after Banksy revealed the prank himself online. Museum staff didn’t even realize the piece was there by prank until reading about it on Banksy’s website.

The fake museum text credited the artist to “Banksymus Maximus” and joked that modern graffiti was often destroyed by officials who “fail to recognize the artistic merit and historical value of daubing on walls.”

Years later, the British Museum officially added the piece to its permanent collection as if 2018.

After years of deterioration from the Venetian canals, Banksy’s “The Migrant Child” returned to the waters of Venice this week following a major restoration effort. Originally appearing overnight in 2019, the piece depicts a child stranded in rising water holding a bright pink flare, becoming a symbol of migrants lost at sea.

Before being permanently reinstalled in 2027, the restored work traveled through Venice by boat on May 8th and 9th, giving the public a rare chance to see it floating through the same canals that nearly destroyed it. Unlike many removed Banksy works that lose their original context once detached from the wall, the project’s goal is to eventually return “The Migrant Child” to its original home overlooking the Venetian water. 🌊🎈

What do you think about the restoration?

This Week in Banksy History ❤️May, 2007 ❤️ Newman street, London

In 2007, One Nation Under CCTV appeared high above a London street beside a real surveillance camera, making the message impossible to miss. The mural showed a child painting the phrase “ONE NATION UNDER CCTV” while a police officer and camera watched from below.

At the time, the piece mocked the growing normalization of surveillance culture in the UK. But nearly 20 years later, the work feels less like satire and more like prediction.

This month, watchdogs in the UK warned that AI facial recognition systems are expanding faster than regulations can keep up with them. London police reportedly scanned over 1.7 million faces this year alone using live facial recognition technology.

Critics have raised concerns about wrongful identifications, privacy, and the idea of constantly being monitored in public spaces. Supporters argue the systems improve safety. The same debate Banksy pointed toward in 2007 is now happening on a much larger technological scale.

The mural itself was eventually removed in 2009, but the phrase “One Nation Under CCTV” has only become more relevant as cameras shifted from passive recording devices to AI powered systems capable of tracking, identifying, and profiling people in real time.

Do you think surveillance technology makes society safer, or does it slowly normalize giving up privacy?🤔
