Museum Curator Doug Meloan recently welcomed students from Manhattan Area Technical College’s Automotive Technology program for a behind-the-scenes tour of the Midwest Dream Car Collection. The students, who are enrolled in the Intro to Automotive class, had the opportunity to step beyond the typical museum experience and explore the collection while learning about the people, technology, and innovations that have shaped the automobile over nearly 140 years.

As they moved through the collection, students encountered vehicles representing nearly every era of automotive history—from automobiles dating back to 1886 to modern high-performance and exotic supercars. Along the way, Meloan shared stories about the evolution of automotive design, engineering, manufacturing, and performance, giving students a chance to see how the concepts they are learning in the classroom have developed over time.

The tour offered a unique opportunity to connect classroom instruction with real-world examples, while also demonstrating just how much the automobile has changed—and how many of its fundamental principles remain the same. For students preparing for careers in the automotive industry, seeing this history firsthand provided a valuable perspective on where the automobile has been, where it is today, and where it may be headed in the future.

The Cars from Radiator Springs are staying a little longer!

Our Route 66 “Cars from Radiator Springs” display has been so popular that we’re extending it through September 20! Since the exhibit’s final weekend was unexpectedly disrupted by a real car crashing into our building, we wanted to give families another opportunity to visit.

If you haven’t seen Lightning McQueen and friends—or want to visit them again—race over to MDCC before they hit the road! We will reopen to the public this Friday, Sept. 4th. Come see Lightning and friends!

**An Update from Midwest Dream Car Collection**

Late Friday night, a driver experienced a medical episode in our parking lot, resulting in a vehicle striking the museum and causing significant damage inside and outside the building. We understand the driver’s injuries were not life-threatening, and we continue to send positive thoughts their way.

We are incredibly grateful for the many calls, messages, comments and offers of help we have received. This weekend reminded us just how fortunate we are to be part of such a caring Manhattan community.

A special thank-you goes to the Riley County Police Department and EMT's and especially Manhattan Fire Department Station 3. Their crew stayed late into the night to help with cleanup and construct a temporary wall to secure the building. We are also deeply grateful to BHS Construction, whose team arrived early Saturday morning to continue cleanup and reinforce the temporary wall.

This has been a difficult weekend for our staff and board, and we sincerely appreciate everyone’s patience and concern. We also apologize to those who planned to visit but found us closed.

We are currently planning to reopen Friday, September 4th. Construction will continue for the next 5 to 6 weeks, and several vehicles will be off the show floor for now. We will be extending the Route 66 exhibit and will announce more details regarding that tomorrow. We appreciate your patience as repairs move forward and we look forward to welcoming you back soon.
