The Schoolcraft County Historical Society page was created to promote public awareness, understanding, and appreciation for Schoolcraft County's history and traditions. The Society is dedicated to the collecting, cataloging, preservation and displaying of artifacts and information depicting the history of Schoolcraft County. To join our organization, you can become an active member, joini

ng us for our meetings and assisting us in our programs if you wish to, for $10.00 per year, or if your time is limited you can become a supporting member for $10.00 per year. Lifetime individual membership is $100.00, Senior Citizens (age 65 or older) lifetime membership is $50.00. The Society holds monthly meeting in which are locally advertised. Other contributions to our organization may be a donation of historical items. Documented histories of families living in Schoolcraft County since its founding would be welcomed. These documents can be sent to the Schoolcraft County Historical Society at P.O. Box 284, Manistique, MI 49854. Our Museum, located the Manistique's Pioneer Park just west of the "Siphon" bridge consists of the historical Water Tower, the historic 1895 log cabin, the Imogene Herbert Museum housed in the Post House and historic fire engines. Throughout these buildings there are many historical artifacts from Schoolcraft County. Usual hours are Wednesday through Saturday from 1 to 4, beginning the end of June until Labor Day.

The Class of MHS 1922 donated Urania to MHS as a parting gift. It was customary for a graduating class to present their school with a symbolic gift at graduation.
Where did Urania originate from? Did an art institute cast her or perhaps Caproni and Bro. (Boston) who were masters at reproducing art sculptures from around the world did.

Back in the day it was customary for institutions such as Detroit Institute of Art, Chicago Art Institute to cast sculptures and then when finished, they would retire the subject and would donate it other small institutions like the AIC, Notre Dame, Rockford College, etc.
Perhaps one of the graduates of Class of 1922 had artistic talents and planned to go to an art school after graduating and they helped facilitate the acquisition.

A heartfelt thank you to Mrs. Kellrooney, Mrs. Peterson and Mr. Gordon for guiding students of St. Francis DeSales School (3rd and 4th grade) through Pioneer Park at the end of the school year. It was wonderful to see the kids learning about our rich history. The sweet thank you notes (and terrific art!) are on display in the Water Tower.

The Schoolcraft County Historical Society is pleased to announce a new heritage program for individuals who can trace their ancestors’ roots to early residents of Schoolcraft County. Led by Jan Ho**er, the Pioneer Project will award a commemorative Pioneer Certificate to descendants who can document a direct line to early pioneers (residing in the county prior to 1860) or settlers (residing in the county prior to 1885).

Applicants will be asked to submit copies of primary source documentation—such as census records, birth, death, and marriage certificates, wills, and land records—demonstrating their lineage to an eligible ancestor. A $25 application fee, along with current SCHS membership, will help cover verification and certificate production.
By establishing this program, SCHS seeks to honor the early families whose presence, labor, and perseverance shaped the foundations of our community. This initiative ensures they are recognized and remembered while strengthening the connection between past and present.

Jan will have a table at Pioneer Park on June 20th during Pioneer Days. She's looking forward to answering any questions you might have. Pioneer Day Saturday June 20th at Schoolcraft County Pioneer Park in Manistique will provide a jammed packed day with music by the Senior Citizen's band, minnow races, food and crafts from the 1920s. Soap making by Stephanie Lakosky, woodworking by James Kaiser, quilting by Diane Evink. There will be games for kids, Paul Bunyan (a much smaller newer one) to take pictures with and a special puzzle party with Judy. Displays in the Water Tower are Native American articles belonging to Tim and Robin Derwin. A Mermaid quilt will also be raffled. A donation to the Society may be made at the entrance to the park. Park open 10am till 3 pm
