The Schoolcraft County Historical Society page was created to promote public awareness, understanding, and appreciation for Schoolcraft County's history and traditions. The Society is dedicated to the collecting, cataloging, preservation and displaying of artifacts and information depicting the history of Schoolcraft County. To join our organization, you can become an active member, joining us for our meetings and assisting us in our programs if you wish to, for $10.00 per year, or if your time is limited you can become a supporting member for $10.00 per year. Lifetime individual membership is $100.00, Senior Citizens (age 65 or older) lifetime membership is $50.00. The Society holds monthly meeting in which are locally advertised. Other contributions to our organization may be a donation of historical items. Documented histories of families living in Schoolcraft County since its founding would be welcomed. These documents can be sent to the Schoolcraft County Historical Society at P.O. Box 284, Manistique, MI 49854. Our Museum, located the Manistique's Pioneer Park just west of the "Siphon" bridge consists of the historical Water Tower, the historic 1895 log cabin, the Imogene Herbert Museum housed in the Post House and historic fire engines. Throughout these buildings there are many historical artifacts from Schoolcraft County. Usual hours are Wednesday through Saturday from 1 to 4, beginning the end of June until Labor Day.

The remaining layers and remnants of paint/finish will now be hand sanded, a very detailed process. Observe the newly sculpted scroll (symbolizing the Treaty of Versailles, referred to thereafter as "the peace treaty") nesting comfortably in her right hand. Visit the Water Tower--look for the sign out front on Deer Street!

Additional armature work and more being performed at the base to provide additional protections from future impacts etc. Renata is using three different techniques to remove the multiple layers of paint and such of the last century--look closely...a total of five in all. Unveiled in the process were "red marks" on her left arm--you'll see a series of red numbers/letters on the arm close up. We continue to research Urania's provenance--these marks could lead us closer to the foundry/artist and/or accession/deaccession. Renata continues to sculpt the scroll and hand--numerous layers involved in this process. LOOK for the "conservator at work" sign out front of the tower.... your cue to stop in!

Welcome Renata!
The Urania restoration has begun! We are beyond thrilled and grateful to have Renata Palubinskas, Fine Arts Object Conservator restoring our century old Urania for the next generations! Friday day 1 photos show armatures at the loss areas, and placements in preparation for fabrication of the hand and scroll. Look for the "Conservator at Work >" sign out front of the tower for open viewing times and stop in to observe this amazing restoration.

Many thanks to The Sault Tribe of Chippewa Indians 2% Funding support for the purchase of the new signposts. We also thank Rob Bosanic and the Schoolcraft County Building & Grounds Crew for their support and hard work in restoring the historic marker, which now looks better than ever!
