Commonwheel Artists Artist of the Month for June is ⭐ Maggie Quinn - Colorado Springs has been home to Maggie Quinn for her entire life. California College of Art, CU Boulder, and Colorado Mountain College provided the educational foundation for her study of the arts. Classical drawing and painting, jewelry design, photography, and pottery were major courses of study. Travels and field expedition study with top ceramicists from around the globe have added a sense of current influence to her work today. Porcelain and wood-fire are continual media and process that she brings to her gallery. The camaraderie and risk that comes from firing clay to temperatures of 2,300°F or more, in a hand fed wood burning kiln, has embedded the lifestyle of the potter into her being. Forms in nature serve as a muse, all media the platform, while ceramics remain the passion of her creation. Original hand drawn sepia ink images are often subject matter for her ceramic canvases.

Look for Maggie's creations in the main gallery and in our June showcase, "The Woods", opening on Friday. 👑

From Claudia Dimidik - "Color is the heartbeat of my work. I am drawn to the expressive, unpredictable nature of liquid media, where pigment suspended in motion is both guided and uncontrollable. Alcohol inks and acrylic washes serve as collaborators in my creative process. I love allowing each medium to reveal its own character.
Although liquid media loosens my approach and invites spontaneity, acrylics are a passion. I treat them much like oils, building layers, depth, and richness to create luminosity and structure. This balance between fluid freedom and intentional layering defines my work.
My current series continues my exploration of alcohol inks and acrylics on tile, board, and canvas, resulting in vibrant, organic compositions. Inspired by open landscapes, hiking, cycling, and travel, I am drawn to unobstructed spaces in nature, the places that suggest movement, freedom, and possibility.
As both artist and educator, I believe learning is lifelong. Each work evolves through experimentation, guided by intention, curiosity, and a deep love of color."

Meet Nicole Copel -
Nicole Copel uses the potter’s wheel as a tool to create forms that are then frequently altered through removing areas of clay to enhance movement and flowing lines. In her work there is a focus on arrangements, groupings and stacked sets.
The surfaces of her porcelain pieces are often decorated using both muted and bright colors, layered glazes, paper resist methods or a wax resist method that creates a slightly raised and textured surface. Nicole uses a variety of firing techniques including oxidation and reduction and she is currently getting to know her recently built soda kiln. The soda ash and water solution sprayed into the kiln at high temperature is evident on the ceramic ware and creates a glaze sheen, directional markings from the spray, and at times a slightly raised orange peel-like surface.
Nicole received her MFA in Ceramics from Kansas State University under Yoshi Ikeda, Anna Calluori Holcombe and Dr. Glen Brown. She has since lived in La Veta, Colorado where she works in her ceramics studio and for a decade owned and operating a gallery in La Veta, Colorado.
As an adjunct art instructor since 2006 at Colorado State University In Pueblo, Nicole has instructed ceramics students from beginners to graduate students. She also teaches kid’s classes, workshops and private lessons. In La Veta, Nicole volunteers with the Spanish Peaks Arts Council and has served on the board, gallery committee and annual fundraising events. Nicole currently serves as an advisory board member for the Potters Council, the national non-profit organization that works on behalf of ceramic artists.

Coming this Friday to Commonwheel Artists - Photography, paintings, wood burnings and ceramic art inspired by unexplored forests, wilderness and the tonic of nature.
"I went to the woods because I wished to live deliberately, to front only the essential facts of life, and see if I could not learn what it had to teach, and not, when I came to die, discover that I had not lived."
-Henry David Thoreau
