For more than 50 years, Vicente Fernandez (1940-2021) was revered as one of Mexico's greatest living singers, blending an operatic vocal range with a deep understanding of the roots of Ranchera music. In the concert special Vicente Fernandez: Un Azteca En El Azteca, the Grammy-winning mariachi singer performs a historic farewell concert at Mexico City's Estadio Azteca, the largest stadium in Latin America. Filmed on April 16, 2016, the concert attracted a crowd of over 85,000 fans, creating a memorable send-off to the King of Ranchera.

Watch Vicente Fernandez: Un Azteca En El Azteca Monday at 7pm.

As the Castaneda Hotel enters it's new era, here's a bit of it's history and the origins of it's naming.

The Fred Harvey hotel in Las Vegas, New Mexico, is named "La Castañeda" after Pedro de Castañeda de Nájera, a chronicler who recorded Francisco Vázquez de Coronado's 1540s expedition through the area. Built in 1898, it was the Fred Harvey Company's first trackside hotel, designed by architect Frederick Roehrig in the Mission Revival style that would become the prototype for future Harvey Houses.

The Hotel's History: The Castañeda was built in 1898 as the first of many "Harvey Houses" hotels along the Santa Fe Railway lines. It was a successful social and hospitality center until it closed in 1948 due to struggles during the Great Depression. After sitting vacant for years, it was eventually restored and reopened in 2019.
The Naming Origin: The hotel was named after Pedro de Castañeda de Nájera, who was a foot soldier and the official chronicler of the expedition led by Francisco Vázquez de Coronado in the 1540s as it traveled through what is now the American Southwest.
Architectural Significance: The hotel was designed by architect Frederick Roehrig and was the first building in New Mexico to be constructed in the Mission Revival style. This style became the prototype for subsequent Harvey House properties.
