Oz: A Visual Celebration

Presented by the International Wizard of Oz Club, Inc. and the Manlius Library of Central New York, Oz: A Visual Celebration is an exhibition of original art work created in celebration of author L. Frank Baum, Oz literature, and The Wizard of Oz by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer studios. Curated by recent Syracuse University graduate Noël Frodelius, the works span photography, draw

ing, painting, and 3D collage. Opening Monday, May 12th, 2014, the exhibition was organized in conjunction with the 36th Annual Oz-stravaganza Convention, running June 5th - 8th in Chittenango, New York. Frank Baum’s novel, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, was written in 1900 and quickly became one of the country’s best-selling children’s books. It was eventually translated into several foreign languages and gained worldwide popularity. The 1939 Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer film took the world of Oz to new popularity when the song Somewhere Over the Rainbow, sung Judy Garland’s rendition of Dorothy, became a national sensation. This year celebrates the 75th anniversary of the film. The Manlius Library of Central New York will be hosting Oz-themed events throughout the month of May. Diane Steele has submitted a work painted by the late artist Donald A. Peters. In her own works, "Rarely throughout the history of art has there been a talent so versatile, so abundant with skill, fantasy and 'story telling' as that of Donald A. Peters." His work depicts a gorgeous landscape done in acrylic, portaying Dorothy and her friends traveling the yellow brick road towards the Emerald City.

Our next artist highlight is Diane Steele.

A native Californian, Diane Steele's home based business in Ojai is inspired by her passionate vision to create 'Thoughtful Gifts of Art'.

A dressmaker-designer and entrepreneur, Diane's keen sense of beauty and creativity enables her to blend function with artistic beauty, keeping her creations fresh, and innovative.

Diane was first inspired by Donald A. Peters' popular images 'Wizard of Oz: Where Dreams Come True' and 'Alice in Wonderland: Through the Looking-Glass'. Diane transforms these images into beautiful lithographs, signed and numbered by Donald A. Peters.

5% of sales from Donald A. Peter’s work will be donated to support the Manlius Library.

Throughout the run of Oz: A Visual Celebration, we will spend some time highlighting each of the participating artists on our page.

Our first mention is Bill Campbell of Century Studios. His submission to the show was a series of sixteen acrylic paintings done in the style of John R. Neill. Bill had this to say about his work: "John R. Neill made an indelible contribution to the world of Oz through his illustrations in 35 Oz books, and the visual creation of hundreds of characters. These paintings are a homage to his work." Bill's work portrays several of the most beloved characters from the world of Oz, including the Tin Man, Jack Pumpkinhead, the Wogglebug, and the Nome King.

His works are not for sale.
