Learn-to-Sail Program

The Outer Banks Community Sailing Program located at the boat shop on the Manteo Waterfront is an "on-the-water program" of the Roanoke Island Maritime Museum. The youth program started in 2000 to make the adventure of sailing available to youth in Dare County and visitors. All instruction is based on US Sailing guidelines. US Sailing is the governing body of the sport of sa

iling in the United Sates. Our coaches are experienced sailors and instructors and have years of sailing experience in various boats. Their experience includes racing at the college and club levels.

The Manteo Waterfront Marina has been selected by Dockwa.com and Marinas.com as a 2025 Boaters' Choice winner.

Now in its 9th year, this annual recognition honors marinas that go above and beyond to deliver exceptional experiences for cruisers. This status is earned entirely through the invaluable reviews from the boaters served by the marina this year.

As a Boaters' Choice winner, the Manteo Waterfront Marina received boater reviews in 2025, with an average rating of four stars or higher.

Boat Show Results

Saturday, October 25th -- the perfect day for the 13th Annual Town of Manteo Wooden Boat Show. A light north wind kept temps in the mid 60’s. The show was well attended and a lot of good boat discussions were had throughout the day. Over 150 votes were cast for the People’s Choice Award.

We had a first-time builder/exhibitor at the show. It was their first boat they had built and was so new it had just been varnished the night before. At around 4:00pm everyone gathered at the floating dock to christen the boat Electron and put it in the water for the first time.

Thanks to all of the museums volunteers that helped make a great event.

This year’s winners are:
Best Owner Built Power: Super Skif - Richard & Debbie Charles – Washington, NC

Star 45 Regatta this Weekend

The Triangle Model Yacht Club out of Raleigh, NC will host the American Model Yacht Association (AMYA) Star 45 Class National Championship Regatta at the Museum this Saturday and Sunday – September 27th and 28th.

The regatta will be held in the waters between the Roanoke Marshes Lighthouse and the net shed.

The 45-inch-long Star 45 weighs 12 to 13 lbs, carries about 1,000 sq. in. of sail, and with a ballast/weight ratio near 70%, it is super responsive in conditions up to 15 mph winds. The Star 45 is small enough to transport in virtually any car, but large enough to sail like a full-size boat.

Radio control sailboat racing uses the same rules and tactics as full-size sailboat racing; the difference is that the skipper is not in the boat. Entries for the regatta are expected from NC, VA, MD, SC, GA and NJ.

The races typically are two laps of a windward-leeward course, the direction of which will depend on the wind direction on the day and the length of which is limited by the skippers’ eyesight. A series of these races over two days comprise the regatta.

Schedule:
Saturday and Sunday
8:30 am - Registration
9:30 - Skippers Meeting
10:00 - First Race
12:00 - Lunch Break for Competitors
1:00 pm - Racing Resumes
3:00 - No Race Shall Start after 3:00pm

This will be a fun event and the boardwalk and lighthouse pier will provide excellent viewing.

Pirates on Shallowbag Bay
The morning Opti sailors paired up in boats this morning. Each boat made a pirate flag, and came up with a song and battle cry for their boat. There is not a lot of wind but a good time on the water.

This season we are seeing a lot of "legacy" sailors. New 8 and 9 year old sailors who's parents (now late 20's and early 30's) took the course when they were 8 an 9 years old. A great life-time skill to pass down.
