The deadline to submit for our publication, Word & Image, is tomorrow April 30! We seek writing and visual art that is well-crafted in a diversity of mediums and subject matter.

Word & Image takes the Greek tradition of Ekphrasis, which is writing in response to art, and turns the tables to include visual art in response to writing. The combinations of word and image that are created reveal new layers of meaning and give artists and writers the opportunity to see their art reflected in the work of another’s creative expression.

The result is a set of printed broadsides for each pairing and an exhibition book of the broadsides. The Word & Image broadsides go on display in the HCA Gallery in the late Autumn, along with the original artwork that is created through this collaboration between paired writers and visual artists.

The corresponding Word & Image exhibition book is published and released in tandem with the opening reception and monthlong exhibition, and is available for purchase through the HCA Gallery.

Show statement:

We are artists, educators, colleagues, and friends. In our shared work at Pacific Northwest College of Art (PNCA), we’ve cultivated an unbroken creative lineage in the region. We’ve supported generations of student artists and each other along the way. Seven of us are Department Chairs of fine arts disciplines with a sustained impact on the creative landscape of the PNW; all of us are committed to slow material exploration, expansive iterative processes, and contemplative refinement.

In this exhibition, we’ve worked as a group to select pieces that showcase our current creative practices while also engaging in shared dialogue around color, form, line, collection, extraction, and being. This is our work when we are not at work.

Fragrant Air: Growing a Scented Garden with Neil Bell
Wonder Garden Speaker Series
May 1 | 5:00-6:30pm
Admission | $10

Given the number of plants we manage to cram into our gardens, it’s astonishing what a small role fragrance plays in our designs. Join horticulturist Neil Bell for an inspiring talk on designing a garden that delights the senses with fragrance all year long.

Neil Bell was Community Horticulturist for the Oregon State University Extension Service in Marion County and Polk County from 2000 to 2021, coordinating both county Master Gardener programs during that time. Now part-time with the OSU Extension, he’s part of a team evaluating some 116 olive cultivars at the North Willamette Research and Extension Center in Aurora.

Walk-ins welcome but registration encouraged: https://hoffmanarts.org/events/fragrant-air/?

Join us for the dedication of Marine Layer, a new sculpture in the Wonder Garden!
May 9 | 1–3 PM
Hoffman Wonder Garden
595 Laneda Avenue
Free and open to the public

Celebrate with us, meet artist Juan Ferreira, and experience this new addition to the garden.

Marine Layer (2026) is a sculptural gateway inspired by the Oregon Coast’s ever-present weather. The piece reflects the environmental forces that shape Manzanita’s landscape and creative spirit. Drawing loosely from the form of a Torii gate, it frames the garden at a human scale while serving as a landmark along Laneda Avenue.

Artist: Juan Ferreira
Fabrication: DaxFab

This project was made possible thanks to the Schpee Foundation.

About the Artist

Juan Ferreira is a Colombian-born multidisciplinary artist based in Nehalem, Oregon. His work bridges art, furniture, and architecture, shaped by the landscapes and culture of the Oregon Coast.
