We all, or at least those of us familiar with the frozen north, hear endlessly in the winter months about the miracle of how every single snowflake that falls onto our beautiful frozen landscape is completely unique. And this is true. For as many snowflakes as there are in the world, there are that many different and completely unique designs.
Believe it or not this is true also for how every single one of us, meaning humans, perceive, interpret, and understand the world. In NLP we refer to this as each persons unique map of the world.
Because of our extraordinary ability to use language to communicate, we actually use this skill of language to organize, understand, and measure what we value, believe, and how we feel about events and other people in our lives defined and understood based entirely on the words we used to explain the person or event to ourselves.
So in a very empowering way, how we experience reality, is literally how we translate it to ourselves in our mind with words. Imagine what the world becomes when you gain skills and tools at translating the world around you in a positive way! It is endlessly empowering and produces limitless resources and opportunities for responding with who and how you want to be!
Another amazing side effect of being aware that every person has a completely unique map of the world gives us flexibility and understanding when experiencing others responding with different words, actions, responses, emotions, and choices than we would, we can call on our curiosity rather than anger or fear.
What has to be true for that person to be responding that way? What must their map be interpreting differently than mine?
Imagine the resourcefulness of responses when you are coming from a place of curiosity, patience, understanding, and compassion!
Every map is completely unique and so is how each map interacts with others. I hope you are empowered to familiarize yourself with the language you are using to create your map and to notice how you are interacting with the many beautifully different maps around you!
I see and rejoice and honor every unique beautiful snowflake, and see and rejoice and honor every unique and beautiful map of understanding of the world. Happy mapping friends! Namaste!
