Carve out some time for our annual Pumpkin Illumination, presented with the Marblehead Family Fund, on Thursday, October 29 at 4pm!

Want to enter a pumpkin into contest? Register your pumpkin at the link in the comments section.

The public can vote for their favorite pumpkins in categories like Scariest Pumpkin, Most Marblehead, Most Creative and more. Tickets to the Illumination are $5 per person or $20 per family and are available at the door. Part of the proceeds fund renovations at Gatchell's Playground.

No offense, but you look like you need some Vitamin C.

Scurvy was a scourge amongst sailors, with hundreds of thousands dying during the American colonial period. Museum director Dan Marshall will reveal the effects of scurvy and the many cures passed down through the centuries.

Dan will also demonstrate the tools and techniques to turn simple ingredients into medicine.

The NBA season begins today. Here's a photo of the Marblehead High School basketball team from 1917.

The ladies are dressed in bloomers, which allowed them greater freedom of movement but caused some minor controversy for revealing their legs.

The physical needs of sports like basketball, bicycling, and swimming played a key role in the death of the corset, which was largely absent from women's fashion by the 1920s.

On in 1781, the British surrendered at Yorktown by signing the Articles of Capitulation.

This 1845 lithograph shows a fanciful, and historically inaccurate, version of events. Cornwallis is shown surrendering his sword to George Washington, but in reality Cornwallis "called in sick" and had General Charles O'Hara do it instead.

Washington refused to accept the sword of anyone but Cornwallis, and had General Benjamin Lincoln do it instead. With the surrender secured, a new America could be forged.

On in 1859, Marblehead's Waterside Cemetery opened to the public.

By the 1850s, Marblehead had a problem on its hands: Old Burial Hill had almost reached capacity. With little space left to bury their dead, the town took over the land known as Bessom's Pasture and part of Harris Farm to form the new Waterside Cemetery.

This gardenlike burial ground was part of the rural cemetery movement, started by Boston's Mount Auburn Cemetery, where the dead were buried in a quiet, green space away from the city center. Small towns like Marblehead followed their lead, and today Waterside features 15,000 burials.

The Marblehead Museum recognizes that the land the museum is built on was home to the Naumkeag band of the Massachusett/Pawtucket Tribes.

For centuries this community moved through and lived upon this land. They followed the seasons, hunted, fished, raised families, grieved for their dead, nourished their living, shared the stories of their ancestors and considered themselves the caretakers of this area.

Marblehead Museum also acknowledges that it was founded upon exclusions and erasures of many Indigenous peoples, including those on whose land this institution is located.

On in 1920, the Marblehead Equal Suffrage League held its final meeting. A month earlier, the 19th Amendment passed granting women the right to vote nationwide. The law was the culmination of 33 years of advocacy in Marblehead that started when the Equal Suffrage League formed in 1887. The league's banner is seen here.

When the Suffrage League dissolved, it became part of the first ever Essex County League of Women Voters.
