On this date, March 4, 1921, Warren G. Harding was inaugurated as the 29th President of the United States on the East Portico of the U.S. Capitol.

For the first time in history, an inaugural address was amplified using a microphone and loudspeakers, allowing those gathered far from the platform to clearly hear the new president’s words.

In his address, President Harding outlined his vision for national policy, encouraged renewed public engagement, and emphasized a steadfast dedication to service.

Toward the close of his speech, President Harding said in part:

“Service is the supreme commitment of life. I would rejoice to acclaim the era of the Golden Rule and crown it with the autocracy of service. I pledge an administration wherein all the agencies of Government are called to serve, and ever promote an understanding of Government purely as an expression of the popular will.”

Today marks the 100th anniversary of the Harding Home opening as a museum. Originally established as a private museum by the Harding Memorial Association, the home welcomed its first visitors just three years after President Harding’s death. Newspapers announced that the home would open on February 20, 1926, from 1:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Admission was $1 for adults and 50 cents for children, with tickets sold by the Marion County Federation of Women’s Clubs.

Temporary exhibits were installed in four downstairs rooms, and the Harding Memorial Association shared with the press its long-term goal of raising funds to construct a permanent museum adjacent to the home.

Today, the Harding home is owned by the state of Ohio and is operated by the Ohio History Connection. The home has been carefully restored to its 1920 appearance and is staged as a traditional house museum. In 2021, the Warren G. Harding Presidential Library & Museum opened nearby—bringing to life the vision for the Harding Presidential Sites that was first set in motion a century ago.
