Yesterday, after our event, a few of us joined Gone Graving at Hall Center Cemetery for another day of restoration work. Together, we repaired 7 gravestones!

The Marion Historic Association is proud to be spearheading this important project to help preserve the history of our community. We asked Gone Graving to assist us because he has the knowledge and expertise needed to properly restore historic gravestones. He has a group of other people with knowledge that assist and we are happy so many are willing to volunteer their time to restore our cemetery. The Association is providing the supplies needed for the project, and together we are working to preserve this important piece of Marion’s history.

Now, we need more helping hands! The more volunteers we have, the more we can accomplish and the faster we can restore this historic cemetery. If you would like to help, please reach out and let us know. No special experience is required—just a willingness to lend a hand. The more volunteers we have, the more stones we can restore. Can’t volunteer? We are also accepting donations to help purchase restoration supplies and support the project.

Thank you to everyone who has already donated their time and effort. Together, we are making a lasting impact and preserving our community’s heritage for future generations.

Thank you to everyone who joined us today for the Biscuit Brothers! We had a wonderful time traveling back to 1872 as Clem and Caleb rolled into the Atlantic Hotel, bringing laughter, music, and a glimpse of life from days gone by.

Missed the show but curious what it was like? You're in luck! We recorded the performance, and it is now available on our YouTube page. Here is the link if you would like to watch https://youtu.be/JQOzVxl7rv0?si=8eo_v_l_VjF_MUsH Be sure to check it out and enjoy this wonderfully wobbly, big-hearted journey back in time!

Thank you to everyone who attended and helped make the event such a success. We look forward to seeing you at future Marion Bicentennial events!

Today we attended the Marion Elementary School Ag Day celebration! The kids loved looking at pictures through the stereoscope, exploring the arrowheads, and seeing old photographs from the past. It was such a fun and engaging day filled with hands-on learning and discovery!

Memorial Day 1982, Marion, NY

Marion’s annual Memorial Day Parade in 1982 was described in a story found in our files as the largest parade they had seen at the time. The story painted a picture of a community coming together to honor those who served.

“Perhaps it was the precision steps of the American Legion Color Guard, with flags awave, followed by uniformed Marion men who once served their country, that brought a tear to the eye.”

Or perhaps it was the sound of the Marion Junior-Senior High School Band, under the direction of Mr. Bruce Thompson, making a spectacular appearance in their black uniforms with the orange “M” on white bibs, playing “Battle Hymn of the Republic” as they passed by. The story also highlighted the new Color Guard Unit under the direction of Mrs. Helen Gigliotti, performing rhythmic routines with flashing flags, the antique station wagon with real wood sides and passengers in vintage hats, and the Marion Fire Department “Red Caps” Band playing their familiar rendition of “The Marines’ Hymn.”

The story continued with details of the service at the cemetery, including the laying of the wreath at the monument, the sounding of Taps, prayers and the benediction by the Legion Post, and the high school band performing and that the 5th graders recited the Gettysburg Address, a tradition that still continues today.

Some traditions remain Marion Strong, and this is certainly one of them.

The Memorial Day Parade will kick off at 11 AM today, May 25th. Our museum will also be open at 10 AM, so stop in and explore while you wait for the parade to begin.

Memorial Day Parade, 1976

Pictured here is an Oliver tractor driven by Arthur Dean, pulling a replica of Marion’s old bandstand, which is featured in our Town’s logo. Riding along were Earl Chapman on tuba, Carm Reynold on drums, Rebecca Wiant on clarinet, and Cliff Smock on trombone.

What makes this photo especially memorable is the glimpse it gives of Marion in 1976, neighbors lining the streets, familiar buildings in the background, and the Town Hall standing in the backdrop of the parade route. It is a wonderful snapshot of community pride and Memorial Day traditions that continue to bring Marion together today.
