1929- The Lend a Hand Society in Marissa. It was the idea of Mrs. Clara (Meek) Varns and was formed in 1904 at the home of Mrs. Luther Walker. It was organize to help people in times of trouble and the first members belonged to the Presbyterian church. It later became inter-denominational. The Rev. Harvey McCormick, pastor of the church, and the doctors of the town advised where help and clothing were needed. In 1951, the society began sponsoring the Heart Fund Drive and during the period around Easter, shut-ins were remembered by the ladies.
Can someone tell us this organization still exists in Marissa?
