McClintock-Darter/Dace Memorial

McClintock-Darter/Dace Memorial The McClintock-Darter/Dace Memorial was started to honor the USS DARTER and DACE crews, Capt. D.H. McClintock and B.D.

Claggett and all the US World War II Sub-Vets. The "Silent Service Memorial" and the McClintock Annex to the Marquette Maritime Museum, were begun to recognize the accomplishments of a Marquette native son in the largest naval battle in history: the Battle for Leyte Gulf, Phillipines, October 1944. Captain David McClintock commanded a wolfpack; the submarines Darter and Dace. He reported the criti

cal first sightings of the main Japanese battle fleet headed for the US landings on the island of Leyte. This contact enabled the US forces to respond and inflict a decisive defeat of the Japanese Navy. The two submarines attacked the Japanese fleet, sinking two heavy cruises and crippling a third. Captain McClintock insisted the recognition expand to include his fellow skipper, Captain B.D. Claggett, USN (retired), the crews of the two submarines, and all the US submarines who served in World War II.

The memorial conning tower replica of the USS Darter is back in the Lower Harbor. In October 2013, she was taken apart and housed at St. Germain's Sandblasting for repairs and a fresh coat of paint. This summer, it was loaded on trucks from Fraco. Inc. and volunteers put it back together for display in the Lower Harbor. The Memorial is part of a display honoring World War II Submarine Veterans.
