VMNH Ship to Shore Project

VMNH Ship to Shore Project The VMNH Ship to Shore Project is an ongoing partnership between the Virginia Museum of Natural History and Deep Earth Academy's Ship to Shore program.

Dr. Denny Casey of VMNH will sail on the JOIDES Resolution May 23 - June 4, 2012. The Virginia Museum of Natural History is partnering with the Consortium for Ocean Leadership's Deep Earth Academy for the Ship to Shore program's School of Rock, with the mission to engage, enthuse, and inform audiences about the exciting science that takes place on board the research ship JOIDES Resolution. Dr. Den

ny Casey, director of education and public programs at VMNH, together with other Rockers (participants) from other institutions, sailed from Curacao to Bermuda aboard the JOIDES Resolution with Integrated Ocean Drilling Program (IODP) researchers, Deep Earth Academy staff, and evaluators from the College on Exploration. This voyage took place from May 23 to June 4, 2012. During the expedition Rockers learned about geology, science process, ship engineering, and the relevance of scientific ocean drilling to build their expertise and experience necessary for the pilot projects. In addition, participants interacted with a range of ship staff and other experts to learn about life at sea and the careers necessary for making the science happen. Participants also worked on pilot projects, conducted live video-broadcasts and ship tours, and engaged in a multitude of discussions about evaluation, teaching informal science, and more. While on the voyage, Dr. Casey posted regular updates and photos highlighting the project. Be sure to check back often for continued updates about the JOIDES Resolution expeditions and the upcoming Ship to Shore events at VMNH!

The JR is the only American vessel dedicated solely to scientific ocean drilling. While on board, you will work in the labs, meet scientists from around the world, coordinate blogs and social media postings, and facilitate live ship-to-shore interactions to classrooms and teacher groups across the globe. And you'll even get paid! It's the adventure of a lifetime.

For more information and the application go to: http://joidesresolution.org/node/453

Any questions can be sent to [email protected] JOIDES Resolution Education Officers have the opportunity to learn shipboard science alongside the expedition?s science party and translate their learning experiences for students, families and the general public through creation of blogs, vid...

IODP Expedition 346 departed from Valdez, Alaska, toward the Japan Sea/East Sea, where it is going to core 8 sites to study the effects of the Himalaya and Tibetan plateau uplift on the East Asian Monsoon.

We have a spectacular view of Mt. St. Elias (18,008 ft) from U1420! The sediments we're collecting came from these mountains, and our scientists are testing the hypothesis that glacial redistribution of sediment from the mountains in S. Alaska to the sea may have led to increased uplift. It's a beautiful sight!

Day 11: June 2, 2012
We packed up and left our home for the last ten days, the JOIDES Resolution, for the Bermuda Institute of Marine Science on St. George's Island. With scooters flying by us on the narrow road, we walked to nearby Town of St. George and found a great eatery overlooking the waters of St. George's Harbour. There were many shops and craft tables in the brick-paved back streets and some live steeel drum performers in the Town Center. This has been an amazing experience for all of the School of Rock participants and the group really enjoyed each other's company. We will all be heading to different places at different times tomorrow but we have made new friends and colleagues and will take away meories that will last a lifetime! Thank you Deep Earth Academy for making this possible! G'night from the BIOS and farewell to the 2012 School of Rock! - Denny
