The Mercury capsules that took the United States’ first astronauts to space were built by McDonnell Aircraft Corporation in St. Louis, Missouri. The Museum has five of the six crewed Mercury spacecraft in our collection, including Friendship 7, which greets visitors as they enter the Museum in Washington, DC. John Glenn became the first American to orbit the Earth in Friendship 7 in 1962.

The Miseum’s Curtiss Canuck (Canadian built Jenny) served in Texas during WWI. It might have served on this field.

Before and after photos from my Sunday power washing of the Diamond Jet. The next step after washing will be polishing the paint and leading edges. Might hook up some external power from time to time so that folks can see the cockpit come alive. Of course I’ll be disabling the engine start capability! Might disable the Radar as well!
