✈️ Field Trip to the Cradle of Aviation! ✈️

Several members of the Massapequa Historical Society Board recently enjoyed a wonderful visit to the Cradle of Aviation Museum after the museum staff saw our recent posts highlighting aviation pioneer Elinor Smith.

It was a fun, educational, and inspiring day filled with fascinating exhibits and great conversations about aviation history. We extend our sincere thanks to the Cradle of Aviation for the invitation, especially our docent, Larry, for sharing his knowledge and enthusiasm, and Jerelyn, Director of Marketing and Communications, for helping make this visit possible.

Experiences like this are just one of the many benefits of being an active member of the Massapequa Historical Society. From special tours and educational programs to unique behind-the-scenes opportunities, there's always something new to discover.

While Memorial Day is often seen as the unofficial start of summer, its true meaning runs much deeper. Today, we pause to honor and remember the brave men and women who gave their lives in service to our nation and the freedoms we enjoy.

As we commemorate this important day, it carries special significance during America's 250th anniversary year—a time to reflect on our nation's history, sacrifices, and enduring spirit.

Please enjoy this beautiful America-themed display at the Bar Harbour Library, thoughtfully created by trustees Valerie and Linda M., along with Linda's husband, Ted M. Their work serves as a meaningful reminder of the patriotism, gratitude, and remembrance that define this day and this great nation.

Wishing everyone a safe Memorial Day as we honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country. 🇺🇸

A heartfelt thank you to Carol A. Gordon from Unspoken Treasures for being our April guest speaker and presenting a wonderful program on legendary jazz saxophonist Buddy Tate.

Born in 1913, Buddy Tate became one of the great tenor saxophone players of the Swing Era, performing with the Count Basie Orchestra and alongside many of the biggest names in jazz, including Louis Armstrong. Known for his rich sound and energetic style, Buddy later became a local resident, giving our community a unique connection to an important figure in American music history. 🎷

We also extend a special thank you to Carol for arranging a surprise guest appearance by Buddy Tate’s daughter, Josie Sanabia, who joined us via Zoom from her home in Arizona. Hearing her personal memories and stories made the presentation even more meaningful for everyone in attendance.

It was truly a fantastic day celebrating local history, jazz history, and the lasting legacy of Buddy Tate. Thank you to everyone who joined us! 🎶👏
