Our current Studio M exhibition, "Across the Ashen River" features jeweler Ariella Har-Even. Her exhibition explores connections between adornment, the body, and rituals of burial and mourning—rituals that were violently
disrupted during the Holocaust—which set in motion a chain of generational
grief and open wounds.

Ariella writes, "As the granddaughter of Holocaust survivors, I use
this work to unravel my own experience, reimagining jewelry not as luxury
but as witness to the complexities of memory and grief. By engaging with jewelry through the lens of burial—or more specifically,
through its absence—'Across the Ashen River' investigates objects as
intersections between desolation and regrowth, as facilitators of renewed
memory and mourning, and as intimate gestures of resilience and reburial."

Meet Ariella at her exhibition reception May 30, from 5:30 to 8:00 p.m. "Across the Ashen River" will be on display through June 21st.

"Introducing Massillon Community Arts Council: Creativity Within Community" is on view in the Fred F. Silk Room Gallery now through September 13, 2026. A free opening reception will be held on Saturday, May 30, 2026 from 5:30–8:00 p.m. The opening receptions for "Driving Forces: The Lincoln Highway Journey" and the Studio M show "Across the Ashen River" by Ariella Har-Even will be held concurrently.

The Massillon Community Arts Council strives to attract and foster art and culture in our community by connecting local artists, businesses, and organizations.

Our focus is growing a vibrant arts presence through creation of murals, public art, and shared creative spaces. At the heart of this vision is The QuARTer, located at the intersection of Diamond Court and Postal Place and surrounded by small businesses, the Massillon Museum, the Lions Lincoln Theatre, and more. We see it as a blank canvas full of potential. We envision a future arts district inspired by the energy and culture of the French Quarter in New Orleans, blending historic influence with a modern creative spirit.

As a city rooted in strong sports traditions, we carry that sense of unity forward. Sports inspire us to come together, and art teaches us how to live that connection daily. Massillon Community Arts Council is committed to finding creative ways in which to highlight the things that make Massillon special through artistic collaboration and shared experiences. When we connect through Massillon sports culture, businesses, and the arts, we create spaces where people feel inspired, connected, and proud of their Massillon community.

Creativity Within Community features the founding artists of the Massillon Community Arts Council—the individuals whose vision helped shape this collective. Each artwork reflects both personal expression and a shared purpose—to use art as a way to connect, uplift, and activate our community. Rooted in history and driven by creativity, this exhibition offers a glimpse into the energy behind the Council and the future it hopes to build.

During Asian American Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage month, we want to spotlight an incredible group of regional artists. Halau Ka Pua Mae’ole Kuikanani is Northeast Ohio’s Hula and Tahitian dance group and has been performing under the mentorship of Malia Erena Tafua of Te Fano O Te Ra and Kumu Hula Kaui Dalire-Boyd’s Kuikanani Association. We have been honored to host them at the Massillon Museum’s Island Party the past three years, and look forward to their performance again this year on Friday, July 17. We asked one of the dancers, Juliette Antony, to share more about her involvement in the group; here’s what she said!

How long have you performed with the dance group? “I have been personally been performing with the group for 2 years.”
Who is a part of your group, and how did everyone get involved?
“[We’re] primarily Asian American and Pacific Islanders with Heritages of Hawaiian, Guam, and Philippines descent. We got involved by finding this group to perpetuate the songs, dances, and stories from our culture and ancestors.”
How has the hula tradition impacted your life?
“It has connected me with the AAPI community in Northeast Ohio and beyond.”
Where have you performed?
“All over Northeast Ohio!”
What is the best advice you’ve been given?
“The energy your give is the energy you get back.”

Halau Ka Pua Mae’ole Kuikanani will perform at the Massillon Museum on Friday, July 17, between 8:15–9:00 p.m. in between a fire show with Divine Harmony Entertainment and performances by Carlos Jones+.

The Massillon Museum’s new Main Gallery exhibition, “Driving Forces: The Lincoln Highway Journey”, will open with a free, public reception on Saturday, May 30, from 5:30 to 8:00 p.m.

The exhibition walks visitors through five overarching topics about the Lincoln Highway: The Good Roads Movement (precursor), The Lincoln Highway Association (the founding of the Lincoln Highway), Tourism, Doing Business, and the Interstate System (decline and nostalgia).

The Lincoln Highway was the first continuous coast-to-coast route designed for motor vehicles. MassMu visitors will be able to trace the Lincoln Highway from the Atlantic to the Pacific along an entire gallery wall, with a large-scale highlight of the city of Massillon.

With a generous Stark Stories grant from ArtsinStark and Visit Canton, MassMu is proud to present this exhibition in recognition of America 250 and Massillon’s Bicentennial.
