BIRTH OF THE GOP
On March 20, 1854, citizens representing various political groups passed through the door of this “Little White Schoolhouse” in Ripon, Wisconsin, to attend what would become an historic meeting. That evening, they agreed to take a stand against slavery and united under one banner to fight this cause. Under the leadership of lawyer Alvan E. Bovay, these citizens dubbed themselves “Republicans:’ invoking the DemocraticRepublican label once used by Thomas Jefferson and James Madison. The name, Bovay explained, reflected what they stood for: “Res publica:’ or equality and the common good.
The Republican Party was born in Wisconsin that evening.

MENOMINEE FOREST KEEPERS-
The smallest monument, pays tribute to an extremely meaningful Wisconsin place and pholosophy. . .
Today, thanks to the wisdom and foresight of the Menominee Chiefs, the Menominee Forest can be seen from outer space like an emerald beacon. It marks a forest exemplary worldwide for being not only economically profitable, but ecologically robust. More than thirty species of trees flourish there, including white pine stands more than two centuries old. In part of the forest where no trails exist, one can wade through ferns and other undergrowth to reach ancient white pines at least 15 feet in circumference and soaring 200 feet into the sky.

SAVE THIS MONUMENT: Stop into Oh! Arts now and make a silent bid.
Wisconsin’s tradition of welcome to people of all races and cultures is nearly as old as the state itself. The back of the monument describes the spirit and brotherhood displayed in the Cheyenne Valley in Hillsboro.

Penny Blank, Visual Arts Teacher at Mauston High School, had students make banners with Georgia O'Keefe as their inspiration. The students made representational paintings of Wisconsin native plants. O'Keefe is a Wisconsin Native and has been called the "Mother of American modernism". Now that's a Great Wisconsin Idea we can all be proud of! Watch for the banners at Riverside Park (scheduled to be hung Wednesday Afternoon). And thank you Penny and students!
