Bonnets and hats were important accessories for women all year round, but especially for summer! A bonnet kept the sun off one’s face and hair in place! If a bonnet became shabby or behind the times, it could be easily refreshed at home with ribbons, flowers, feathers, ruffles, or it could be completely overhauled - stripped down to the bonnet form and re-covered with totally different fabric. Come out to see us and watch bonnet making this afternoon! 👒

Blacksmiths in the Backcountry were almost a necessary part of life. Most of the time they were not making swords or other weapons, but items that would have had more everyday uses, such as nails, hinges, and cooking utensils. Anything bigger would have to be cast and would have been handled by the local foundry, called Hill’s Iron Works. At the iron works was the largest number of enslaved individuals forcibly producing goods. This foundry was burned down by none other than Captain Christian Huck because of Hill’s production of iron for the Whig cause. This would have cut off not just workable metal for the Whigs, but also for the local community that Hill served, creating friction and giving locals yet another reason to despise Huck and the Tories occupying the area.

Huck’s Bones

According to James Rufus Bratton, the grandson of Col. William Bratton, British Captain Christian Huck’s body was disinterred following his death at the Battle of Williamson’s Plantation. Col. Bratton’s son, William Junior, was studying medicine and it is said that he disinterred Huck for use as a skeletal model to hang in his doctor’s office. Interestingly, this was not an uncommon practice for eighteenth and nineteenth century doctors. According to tradition, James Rufus Bratton disinterred the body of George Langford for a similar purpose. Langford had been executed for the murder of his wife.

Come out to see the events that led to the Battle of Huck’s Defeat on July 11 & 12 from 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. There will be two different battle reenactments! Tickets on sale SOON! 🇺🇸

Joseph Kerr: Revolutionary War Spy

During the American Revolution a North Carolina Patriot named Joseph Kerr served as a Patriot spy in and around present-day York County. In his pension application he claims to have infiltrated the camp of British Capt. Christian Huck prior to the Battle of Williamson’s Plantation which occurred on July 12, 1780. Though his identity was discovered, Kerr managed to deliver vital intelligence to the Patriots. He also claims to have infiltrated Patrick Ferguson’s camp prior to the Battle of King’s Mountain which occurred on October 7, 1780.

Watch the annual Battle of Huck’s Defeat unfold 246 years later as you see the Carolina Piedmont’s role in the Southern Campaign, the fight for freedom, and how this battle was a crucial victory and turning point in the war on July 11 & 12 from 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. Tickets on sale SOON! 🇺🇸
