I’m overwhelmed by the beautiful and supportive feedback on our partnership with the Woodsong school. Thank you!!
I also want to give a big warm welcome to our new followers. The enthusiasm of this group over the years has been a key driver in my ongoing commitment to preserve my father’s legacy at Hawk Creek.
Many of you asked for more information about the folk school and I expect Woodsong will post more soon. Currently they are busy with renovation and upkeep as well as the end of the school year. You can reach out to them directly to register your interest at [email protected]
Sincerely, Lisa

Big hello to fans of The Village at Hawk Creek in McDonald, Tennessee! It’s been way too long.
I am overjoyed to announce that the Woodsong Forest School has taken over the full operation of the Village at Hawk Creek. In this capacity they will be maintaining and improving the property as well as using it for public and private events and education.
This means that the Village will continue in operation as a historic site and that you will have on-going opportunities to visit and participate. To begin with, Woodsong is launching a Folk School at the Village this spring, with blacksmithing classes, woodworking workshops, ceramics classes, quilting, bluegrass instrument making, and more! Please reach out to [email protected] for more information.
After my parents passed away (in 2018 and 2023 respectively) the estate was tied up in multiple ownership and trusts. Late last year I was finally able to acquire the full rights to the property in order to ensure that my father’s dream for his Village could be protected.
During this time Bonnie Cretton of Woodsong approached me with a beautiful proposal. In addition to finalizing a long term lease of the Village and surrounding property, Woodsong has now purchased my parents’ former home. With this partnership in place, Woodsong and I are able to preserve this special place with its beautiful creeks, forests, and fields, as well as carry out the wishes of my father for his Village to be used for the education of youth about our pioneer past.
As a part of our agreement, Woodsong will now administer this page and keep it updated.
Sincerely,
Lisa Newman

The Village at Hawk Creek is private property and closed to the public except for occasional open house days and tours. Check back to this page for information on future events.
The Village at Hawk Creek is a collection of authentic log buildings brought together on the property of the Newman Farm by the late Tom Newman. All of the buildings were originally located within a 25 mile radius of McDonald, Tennessee.
Each log structure was meticulously disassembled with every log and timber individually numbered. They were then moved to their present location and reassembled as close to the original construction as possible, including the chimneys. All cabins are constructed from hand-hewn logs and full dovetail notches. Many of the original rafters and boards were saved for reassembly.
The property also has a covered bridge, spring house, blacksmith shop, and several horse drawn wagons from the period. The blacksmith shop features tools and construction common to the early 1900s. An original one horsepower popper engine from the early 1900s operates a portable primative grist mill. Additionally a number of pioneer tools and furnishings are on display. You might even find a moonshine still.
The village represents the vision of Tom Newman, who spent the last 50 years of his life collecting and restoring the pioneer buildings. In 2016, he said this about the village:
“As my interest in pioneer life grew I developed deep respect for our ancestors who came over the mountains to an unknown land. A man had to feed and protect his family, and build his home with his own hands. I didn’t want my children and grandchildren to forget this heritage amidst a society of push button communication and conveniences. It is my sincere hope and dream that what I’ve preserved here will keep the knowledge of America’s pioneers, and their bravery and cleverness, alive for future generations.”
Since Tom’s passing, his wife Sally Newman is continuing his vision. The Village at Hawk Creek is a private property and not open to the public except by appointment and on open house days.
The Newman Farm has been a working farm since 1892. You can view other furnishings and tools from the Newman family on loan for display at the Museum Center at Five Points in Cleveland, Tennessee.
